How to Size an Air Compressor for Jackhammers or Sandblasting

You can size an air compressor for jackhammers or sandblasting by matching its airflow (CFM) and pressure (PSI) to your tools’ needs. Most jackhammers need a compressor that provides 60 to 120 CFM and at least 60 to 100 PSI. Sandblasters can range between 10 and 100 CFM or more, so always check your tool’s specifications and choose a compressor that can deliver continuous air without dropping pressure.

What Are the General Rules of Thumb for Compressor Sizing?

The general rule of thumb for compressor sizing is to use a compressor hose that matches your tool’s inlet size. Usually, this is at least 3/8 inch for sandblasting and jackhammers. Keep your pressure around 90 to 100 PSI for most sandblasting and 60 to 100 PSI for jackhammers. For horsepower, plan on about 1 HP for every 4 CFM your compressor produces.

How Big of an Air Compressor Do You Need to Sandblast?

You need an air compressor for sandblasting that’s big enough to deliver steady, high airflow. For most sandblasting jobs, you need at least 10 to 20 CFM at 90 to 100 PSI for smaller cabinets. For larger or commercial sandblasting with a bigger blast pot, you may need 50 CFM or more. If your compressor is too small, you’ll lose pressure and your blasting won’t be effective.

How Many CFM Do You Need to Sandblast?

You need around 20 CFM or more to sandblast smaller cabinets effectively, but some bigger nozzles and continuous blasting jobs may need 35 to 50 CFM. Ultimately, the amount of CFM you need depends on your sandblaster’s nozzle size and the type of blasting media you’re using. Always check what your blaster and nozzle need to get the job done.

Will a 6-Gallon Air Compressor Run a Sandblaster?

A 6-gallon air compressor will not typically run a typical sandblaster. Most 6-gallon compressors cannot deliver the high CFM output that sandblasters need. You might get a few seconds of blasting with a very small nozzle, but the compressor will struggle to keep up, and you’ll lose pressure quickly.
