Santa Barbara has held a special place in my heart ever since my very first visit during college on a girls’ trip. I immediately fell in love with its beautiful coastline, Spanish-style architecture, and relaxed atmosphere.
Over the years, I’ve returned many times to explore everything from its beaches and wineries to its charming downtown streets and scenic waterfront. Most recently, I was back for a girls’ getaway celebrating a 35-year reunion with my high school friends, which reminded me just how timeless and special this coastal city is.

🌸 The Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall are two of the best times to visit Santa Barbara, offering comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds, and often better hotel rates. Summer brings warm beach weather, but it is also the busiest and most expensive season. Winter is generally quieter and more affordable. It’s a beautiful time of year but there’s a greater chance of rain.
🌤️ Be Prepared for Changing Coastal Weather
Santa Barbara has a mild coastal climate, so mornings and evenings can feel considerably cooler than the afternoons especially near the ocean. Late spring and early summer can also bring “June Gloom,” with low clouds and fog lingering along the coast in the mornings before it clears up later in the day. Dress in layers and carry a light jacket for mornings and evenings, even during summer.
🏨 Reserve Your Hotel Early
Santa Barbara is a popular weekend destination, especially in the summer and during holidays. There are often festivals and university events nearby. As such, oceanfront hotel rooms can book well in advance and tend to be expensive. Reserve your accommodations early, consider visiting during the week, or plan your trip outside the peak summer season for the best rates.
🍽️ Make Restaurant Reservations
Popular restaurants can fill up quickly for dinner and weekend brunch. Make reservations in advance, particularly if you want to dine at a waterfront restaurant or one of the trendy spots in the Funk Zone.

Downtown Santa Barbara has public parking garages, while the waterfront has a combination of paid lots and limited street parking. Hotels may charge a separate nightly parking fee. Always check posted rates and time limits before leaving your car. I have received a couple of parking tickets in Santa Barbara, both times within minutes of the time expiring on the meters.

Although you can visit tasting rooms in the Funk Zone or on Stearns Wharf without leaving Santa Barbara, visiting the nearby wineries and vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley requires more planning. Reserve popular tastings and tours in advance and arrange transportation if you plan to visit multiple wineries. You will enjoy yourself more knowing you don’t have to drive back.
🌊 Don’t Expect Tropical Ocean Water Temperatures
Like much of coastal California, Santa Barbara has a Mediterranean climate, but the Pacific Ocean remains cool throughout the year. A swimsuit is fine for relaxing on the beach or taking a quick dip, but you will likely want to consider wearing a wetsuit for long swims, surfing, and kayaking. It’s not like the East Coast warmer waters.
🥾 Check Conditions Before Outdoor Adventures
Check current trail, beach, ocean, and weather conditions before hiking, kayaking, surfing, or sailing. Winter storms can affect trails and beach access. High surf, strong winds, and wildfire conditions can also disrupt outdoor plans at other times of the year.
Where to Stay in Santa Barbara
Where you stay in Santa Barbara will depend on the experience you’re looking for. Downtown is best for walking to shops and restaurants along State Street, while the Funk Zone places you close to tasting rooms, nightlife, and the waterfront. Montecito offers a quieter, more luxurious escape, but I prefer staying near the beach along Cabrillo Boulevard.
Santa Barbara Inn
For a first visit, I recommend staying at the Santa Barbara Inn. This upscale boutique hotel sits directly across from East Beach, with beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands. Its location along Cabrillo Boulevard places you between downtown Santa Barbara and Montecito, with Stearns Wharf, the waterfront bike path, Santa Barbara Zoo, and the Funk Zone all nearby.
Many of the rooms have private balconies and ocean views, while the property also offers a pool, an outdoor fire pit, and sits right across from the sand. The onsite restaurant Convivo serves Italian-inspired coastal cuisine, including house-made pasta, wood-fired pizza, fresh seafood, and craft cocktails. Its outdoor patio overlooking the ocean is especially beautiful at sunset.
The hotel’s combination of location, coastal views, comfortable rooms, and onsite dining makes it an excellent home base for exploring Santa Barbara and is my favorite place to stay.
