HEALTHY FRUIT PIZZA RECIPE
I used to think that fruit pizza – or dessert pizza as some call it – was only good to make in the summer (when berries were in season).
But that’s not true! Fruit pizza is one of our favorite desserts to make all year round because:
- It’s really, really easy.
- The kids LOVE to help decorate…
- And they LOVE to eat it even more!
- It’s a beautiful presentation for company.
- It tastes just as good the next day.
- You can customize it with your favorite fruit toppings.
- I love how healthy it is!
Really, truly, the kids asked me if I could make this again as soon as they had their first bite. They really love fruit pizza!
FRUIT COOKIE PIZZA INGREDIENTS
You only need four basic ingredients to make a fruit cookie pizza:
- One batch of my Healthy Sugar Cookie Dough. I’ve reduced the sugar so it’s just sweet enough, but not overly sugary! The crust turns out soft, tender, and chewy.
- Cream Cheese + Honey. This is the “sauce” for our pizza, which is lightly sweetened and perfectly tangy.
- Fresh Seasonal Fruit. SEASONAL is the key word here. Whether it’s spring, summer, or winter, there’s always fresh fruit perfect for fruit pizza. Plus, buying in-season fruit saves us money, too!
SEASONAL FRUITS PIZZA
The fruit you put on fruits pizza depends heavily on the season. The more variety you choose, the more colorful fruit pizza you end up with! And the more flavor!
My favorites are fresh summer berries like fresh strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries. But don’t limit your creativity. There are so many tasty options beyond fresh berries!
In spring and summer, choose fruits like:
- Apricots
- Bananas
- Blackberries
- Blueberries
- Cherries
- Mango
- Peaches
- Plums
- Raspberries
- Strawberries
In fall and winter, try these fruits:
- Apples
- Bananas
- Cranberries
- Grapes
- Kiwi
- Mandarin oranges
- Pineapple
Cut smaller fruits in half and thinly slice larger fruits for the prettiest fruits pizza. You can also use canned fruits, but make sure to drain them really well first.
HOW TO MAKE FRUIT PIZZA
Making a healthy fruits pizza is as simple as baking the crust, making the sauce, and topping it with fresh fruit!
Step 1. Prepare the cookie dough crust. Preheat the oven to 350F. Prepare the Healthy Sugar Cookie dough. Press the dough into a 9×12 sheet pan or 12-inch pizza pan (not one with holes). Bake for 10-13 minutes, until the cookie is light golden brown. Let it cool completely.
Step 2. Mix up the cream cheese frosting for fruit pizza. Combine the cream cheese and honey in the bowl of a stand mixer and beat the cream cheese mixture until it is smooth and creamy. Spread it evenly over the cooled crust.
Step 3. Top the pizza. Layer the fruit over the cream cheese. Decorate however you wish, with whatever fruit you have!
Step 4. Slice with a pizza cutter and enjoy!
MAKE AHEAD RECIPE FOR FRUIT PIZZA
There are two main ways you can make this easy fruit pizza recipe a day ahead of time:
- Prepare the cookie dough, but don’t bake it. Just put it in the freezer or fridge, unbaked. The next day, press the dough into the cookie sheet and bake.
- Prepare the ingredients separately. Bake the crust, mix the icing, and prepare the fruit, but don’t actually assemble the pizza.
Fruits pizza is best when eaten the day it’s assembled, so if you’re hosting company, I recommend assembling it an hour or so before they arrive, especially if you’re using fruits that oxidize (turn brown) once sliced, like apples or bananas.
You can brush the top with lemon juice to help prevent browning. Covering in plastic wrap will also help if you have to bring it to a potluck or picnic!
However, my family and I enjoyed this fruit cookie pizza the next day too! Cover and store leftovers in the refrigerator. The cookie crust and the fruits get a little bit softer, but it’s still perfectly delicious!
HOW TO MAKE FRUIT DESSERT PIZZA COOKIES
Want to make healthy mini fruit pizzas?
If you want to make individual soft sugar cookie bases instead of one big pizza, follow the instructions in the Healthy Sugar Cookies Recipe to cut and bake the cookies – I suggest using your largest circle cookie cutter for this one.
Let them cool completely before icing and decorating.
MACRO-FRIENDLY FRUIT PIZZA RECIPE
This fruits pizza has a good balance of fat (from the cream cheese frosting) and carbohydrates (from the crust, and possibly from the fruit, depending on which you choose).
Notice what’s missing?
The protein.
But since this is a dessert pizza, chances are you’ll be enjoying it after a meal. Make sure to include plenty of lean protein in your meal and track your fats and carbs, and you can easily make a slice of sugar cookie pizza fit with your macros.
Enjoying treats, especially homemade treats with simple ingredients, is a great start, but it’s not enough. You also need to make sure you’re getting enough protein to fuel your body. FRUITS PIZZA RECIPE FAQS
What is the best fruit pizza crust?
This fruit pizza recipe uses lightly sweetened sugar cookie dough for the crust. It’s just sweet enough to complement the cream cheese frosting and the fresh fruit.
Can you freeze the fruits pizza?
I wouldn’t recommend it – the moisture from the cream cheese frosting and the fruit will affect the texture. You can make the sugar cookie dough and freeze it raw, or bake the crust and freeze it ahead of time.
What is the best design for fruit pizza?
I’ve seen a mixture of strawberries and blueberries to look like a flag for the Fourth of July. I’ve seen a fruits pizza divided into 4 sections, with different fruits in each quarter. I tend to make thinner rows of different fruits – I think the fruit “stripes” look nice, and keeping them small means each slice ends up with multiple fruits.
Can you make fruit pizza gluten free?
Yes! You’ll need to use a gluten-free sugar cookie recipe for the base. My recipe does not convert really well, but I’m SURE there’s a good one out there! Then top with cream cheese and fruit as described in this recipe.

Ingredients
Sugar Cookie Dough
- ⅓ cup sugar I used Turbinado
- 8 Tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ⅛ tsp salt
- ½ tsp baking powder + ⅛ tsp
Fruit Pizza Toppings
- 8 oz cream cheese room temperature
- 2-4 Tbsp honey
- 1-3 cups fresh seasonal fruit washed and sliced/diced
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350F. Prepare the dough for the sugar cookies by mixing all ingredients together in a large bowl or stand mixer.
-
Press the dough into a 9” x 13” baking pan and bake for 10-13 minutes, or until the cookie is light golden brown.
-
When the cookie is done, set it aside to cool completely, for about two hours.
-
When the cookie is completely cooled, combine the cream cheese and honey in the bowl of a stand mixer until it is smooth and creamy. (I use the same mixer I used for cookies; simply wipe it out with a paper towel first.)
-
Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the cookie, getting as close to the edge as you can.
-
Top as desired with fresh seasonal fruit.
-
Cut into squares and enjoy!
