
Batteries aren’t found exclusively in automobiles. Nearly all modern airplanes have them as well. They are typically used to start the engines, power various instruments and provide a source of emergency electricity. What Are Battery Hold-Down Clamps
Battery hold-down clamps are fastening assemblies that are designed to secure batteries in place. While available in different types, they typically include one or more brackets and a set of threaded fasteners.
Battery hold-down clamps are often used in conjunction with trays. The battery is placed on a tray — similar to the battery trays used in automobiles — after which a battery hold-down clamp is installed. The bracket goes over the top of the battery. Threaded fasteners are then used to tighten the bracket, creating a clamping force that secures the battery in place.
Of course, there are different types of battery hold-down clamps, some of which have different parts or work in different ways. All battery hold-down clamps, however, are designed to hold batteries in place via a clamping force. They press against the battery to immobilize it and prevent unwanted movement.
The Importance of Battery Hold-Down Clamps
Why do aircraft batteries need hold-down clamps exactly? Most airplanes have one to three primary rechargeable batteries. If not secured properly, these batteries will inevitably move during flight. Even small movements can cause problems with the battery or the aircraft.
Airplanes shake from turbulence. Hard landings can also cause airplanes to shake. When an airplane shakes, any loose onboard components will shake and move as well. A loose battery may move from its original position, allowing the terminals to touch nearby conductive materials. This can lead to dangerous electrical arcs that cause short circuits or even fires.
Battery hold-down clamps prevent aircraft batteries from touching nearby materials by holding them in place. A properly clamped and secured battery won’t move, thereby lowering the risk of short circuits and fires.
Battery hold-down clamps can also extend the life of aircraft batteries. Aircraft batteries don’t last forever. Depending on the type, they typically have a lifespan of three to 10 years. Excessive movement, though, can shorten their lifespan. When a battery slides and moves around a lot, it may develop small cracks that can interfere with its ability to hold a charge.
