A scientific approach to creating lasting change

A program built on evidence

Our approach follows established guidance for humane dog population management and animal welfare, including the Animal Birth Control Rules and guidance issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), and the International Companion Animal Management Coalition (ICAM)’s recommendations for effective dog population management.

We record every dog individually, including their identification tag and the location where they were caught and released. Dogs are returned to the exact location where they were found, in accordance with the principle of returning sterilized dogs to their original habitat. AWBI’s rules require records of capture and release locations, dog identification and treatment records as part of ABC programs.

Before surgery, each dog receives an initial health examination and is examined again before the procedure begins. We also conduct population surveys across Udaipur to measure changes over time and use the results to guide where our teams work next.

This combination of area-based coverage, individual animal records and ongoing population monitoring allows us to measure our progress and continually refine the program.

This work also supports the Government of India’s One Health vision by improving animal welfare, protecting public health and helping people and animals live safely alongside one another.
