What most people get wrong
Eczema is often managed or viewed as just a skin issue, and the typical response reflects that: a cream to calm the visible rash. That approach makes sense on the surface, but the rash itself is a result of an internal dysfunction rather than the starting point. While a cream can ease discomfort while internal work happens, cream alone misses the root cause of the condition.
Why eczema occurs
Eczema can result from several factors compounding at once rather than a single clear cause, with skin barrier function being one of the most significant. Skin relies on lipids and a protein called filaggrin to retain moisture and keep irritants out. In children with eczema, lipid structure is often altered and filaggrin production is reduced, allowing moisture to escape more easily and irritants to penetrate more deeply than they should.
Gut health plays a substantial role as well. When the intestinal lining is more permeable than it should be (a state commonly referred to as leaky gut), undigested food particles can enter the bloodstream. The immune system responds to these particles as foreign material, and the resulting inflammation can present in the skin.

Genetics and environmental exposure also play roles. Though genetics alone doesn’t determine the outcome, a family history of eczema, asthma, or allergies increases the likelihood of eczema developing. Dry climates, hard water, harsh soaps, and household allergens all place additional demand on a system that’s already under strain.
Why food is a trigger, not the root cause
Food can reliably set off a flare, but it’s rarely the reason a child is prone to flares in the first place. This is part of why eczema can develop before a baby has started solids. It’s also why elimination diets alone often fail to clear eczema long-term.
Eczema and food sensitivities frequently share the same underlying issue: a gut and immune system that need support. Eliminating a trigger food can provide meaningful relief, but it has to be combined with deeper support. On its own, it’s rarely a complete resolution.
