In a nutshell: CD Projekt Red is not quite ready to fully unveil The Witcher 4. Instead, the company plans to spend much of Gamescom this week taking players back to the world of The Witcher 3, a dozen years after the critically acclaimed RPG’s initial release.
Over five days, CD Projekt Red will host previews, interviews, and behind-the-scenes looks at Songs of the Past, the first Witcher 3 expansion since 2016’s Blood and Wine. The streams will be available on Twitch and YouTube from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET each day, from August 26 through August 30.

CD Projekt Red previously revealed that the expansion will be similar in size to Blood and Wine, which featured a new location and around 30 hours of additional quests. Set to launch next year on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC, Songs of the Past is being co-developed by Fools Theory, the studio behind The Thaumaturge, which is also helming a remake of the first Witcher game.
Meanwhile, The Witcher 4, which will shift the focus from series protagonist Geralt to Ciri, is targeting a 2028 launch window. CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski’s carefully worded statement suggests that the game could still slip to a later date.
However, whenever The Witcher 4 does launch, it will start a countdown on the company’s plan to release three games in six years. CD Projekt believes that its work with Epic Games on Unreal Engine 5 will enable faster development cycles between installments.

CD Projekt Red is adopting an ambitious release schedule over the next several years. In addition to its Witcher 1 remake, the company is also developing another Witcher game from The Molasses Flood, an in-house sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, and an unannounced new IP.
The aggressive pace would mark a drastic turnaround from CD Projekt Red’s previous release schedule. The first three Witcher games launched four years apart, followed by the disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077 five years after The Witcher 3. The company spent another three years fixing the game, culminating in the 2023 release of the well-regarded Phantom Liberty expansion.
