An unusual incident happened in Lagos when a filling station reportedly put water instead of petrol into the car of a resident, Oluwaseyi Oluwabiyi. Her car broke down soon after she left the station.
Oluwabiyi shared her story in a video released on Wednesday by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), where she disclosed that she had noticed a problem when her car stopped about 10 minutes after leaving the filling station.
She said she called a mechanic, who checked the car and found water in the tank instead of petrol.
She reported the issue to LASCOPA that same day and provided pictures, videos, and other evidence.
“I bought fuel from a filling station and unfortunately, they fueled my tank with just water. There was no fuel at all in what was put in my tank,” Oluwabiyi said.
She said that after the incident, LASCOPA told her to get an estimate for the repair costs. Then, the agency invited both sides to a mediation session.
She said the filling station was found responsible for the incident and had to pay for her car repairs and extra damages.
“They were made to pay for fixing my car and for extra damages.
This was all thanks to LASCOPA. My car was fixed and restored to how it was before the incident,” she said.
Oluwabiyi described LASCOPA as one of the “hidden gems” provided by the Lagos State Government to protect consumers and resolve disputes outside the conventional court system.
She said the agency’s intervention demonstrated the importance of alternative dispute resolution in resolving consumer complaints promptly while helping to reduce the burden on the courts.
“If you have any disputes, I strongly recommend, or you have any complaints, I strongly recommend that you report it to the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, which will ensure that the issues are dealt with and resolved promptly,” she said.
