Our latest Spotlight on projects and people within the Graphic Medicine international community focuses on a new comic inspired by multiple myeloma and the medication DARA, from Mark Phillips and collaborators.
About the Work
My sister has multiple myeloma and started taking the drug DARA in 2019. She and I had some interesting/fun conversation about her visualization of what DARA was doing for her, and one thing led to another, and I had a short comic book made for her, featuring DARA as the super-heroine. She loved it, her doctors at the Mayo Clinic loved it, and that is as far as it has gone. I transferred the paper comic book to a website, www.daracomic.com. Given the comic’s popular reception at Mayo Clinic, I just want to make the web version available to more people who might find it helpful.
About the Creators
I found the artists at Bad Wombat Studios on Freelancer.com. Bad Wombat Studio is a partnership of two visual artists, Nurain N, and Zara S. The illustration is done by Zara while Nurain is the editor. They met at their university and immediately became rivals, only to end up as best friends at the end of college. “We acknowledged each other’s talent and decided that working together combining our abilities is much better than competing with each other.” There is more biographical information about the artists on the web site, www.daracomic.com/artists.
