Review: Barn Hammer Ten Triple IPA – BeerCrank.ca

Barn Hammer Ten Triple IPATen years deserves a 10% beer. Adventure is brewing.

Today’s sampling is Barn Hammer Brewing’s Ten Triple IPA, a brew made for the tenth anniversary of the brewery. 2016 was a massive year for the Manitoba craft beer industry – not one but multiple breweries all opened up in a short period of time after there being ten years since the last brewery opening with Half Pints Brewing. I wrote an article about all the openings while I was writing my First Draught column in the Brandon Sun. Heck, I still remember when Tyler from Barn Hammer sent me a message to come check out their plans on what they were expecting to build out of an old garage.. it’s come a long way!

Now that Barn Hammer is 10 years old, they created a Triple IPA in honour of the occasion – Ten trips around the sun. A juicy triple IPA reminiscing of mango gelato, peach nectar, and passion fruit shaved ice. The colossal grist is formed by a blend of the finest pale, pilsner, wheat and chit malts, fortified by smooth as silk flaked oats.

Appearance: Deep, opaque orange body with a moderate amount of off-white head on top. There’s a tad bit of lacing on the glass as it goes down.

Aroma: The things about Triple IPAs are that they’re incredibly sweet AF and this is definitely sweet but not too too bad. It’s tropical with notes of peach, leafy & floral hops, a hefty oatiness, and a hint of mango.

Taste: Peachy, oaty, leafy and floral hop. This is definitely a light sipper as I forgot that this is 10% so I briefly choked.. but that happens. A bit of a pûréed fruit taste to it, mango, a tad bit of bitterness but that’s subdued by the oats (again) to give it a hint of a breakfast cereal vibe at the very end.

Overall Thoughts: This immediately reminded me of something but I couldn’t remember.. it was Flying Monkeys’ Sparklepuff TIPA, also 10% and peach-forward.. a beer I bought in Netherlands, sampled in Belgium and have seen all over Manitoba. For 10 years, it’s definitely a nice choice and I’m glad they did this in a 355mL format because this.. this is a very strong IPA.
