One Piece Episode 10 (And Part of 11) (4Kids) The World’s Strongest Weirdo! Jango the Hypnotist!/ The Bluff and the Bluffer | Sub Dub Comparison
Plot: A confrontation between Klahadore and Usopp leaves him banned from Kaya’s house. As Luffy tries to talk with him at the shore, they overhear Klahadore talking with an odd hypnotist named Jango. They’re discussing hypnotizing Kaya to sign a will before she dies, indicating Klahadore as her heir, and secretly killing her in an ‘accident’ so he can get her money. Klahadore reveals himself to be the legendary pirate captain, Kuro, who faked his death three years ago to start this coup. In addition to the hit on Kaya, they’re planning on attacking and pillaging the village. They’re found out by Klahadore who commands his subordinate, Jango to hypnotize them. He only manages to hypnotize Luffy (and himself) and Luffy falls from a huge cliff to the beach below.
Determined to stop his plot, Usopp runs to the village to warn everyone. However, Klahadore is not worried at all since he knows no one will believe Usopp the liar.
Usopp makes it to the village where Klahadore’s words ring true as he tries desperately to warn the villagers of the impending attack only to find ad angry mob wielding brooms who are sick of his lies and won’t believe a word he says.
As Usopp is run out of town, Zoro, Nami and the Usopp Pirates find Luffy crumpled on the beach below the cliff. Is Luffy really dead injured?

I’ll explain that red coloring at the end.
The title screen is kept in the same spot, but the dub seems unreasonably awkward. The original is awkward but made funny and awkward since the sheep keeps chewing grass as Luffy says the title out loud. In the dub, the music is changed to really soft goofy music and no one is saying the title out loud so it’s just awkward.

They cut out about half of the shot of Klahadore walking towards Luffy and the others.
I swear to God, Klahadore’s stupid habit of pushing up his glasses with the edge of his palm is pissing me off way too much, and I do that sometimes myself.
They remove Kaya yelling out of her window at Klahadore after he says Usopp’s dad loves treasure more than his family.
They ‘censor’ the red mark on Klahadore’s face to a brown mark.

….Are you guys for real now? That’s not even blood. His face is just red from getting punched…..Just…are you serious?
They remove Usopp yelling that he’s the son of a pirate while his head is down.
Klahadore originally yells to Luffy and the others to leave too as we see a shot of the nearby tree. In the dub, they cut straight from him standing there (perpetually fixing his glasses….) to Kaya coughing.
They shorten the shot of Kaya with her face in her pillow and omit the line about the cook working hard to make her meals that she enjoys.
Kaya originally asks why Klahadore kicked Usopp out. She knows she was wrong to keep talking with Usopp in private, but he didn’t need to go that far. In the dub, the shot of Klahadore standing in front of the tea pot is shortened, and she asks what he would know about it (offending someone) when he was so cruel to Usopp.
Dub!Klahadore really cannot sound like he’s not a villain.
They shorten the shot of Kaya watering the flowers.
They remove a closeup of Kaya during the flashback, but it’s the same shot as from right before we see Klahadore’s silhouette.
Wow, I’m really surprised they didn’t force dialogue upon that scene where Kaya’s dad silently accepts Klahadore into their home.
Kaya originally calls Klahadore a blockhead for being stubborn against Usopp, and he says being a blockhead will have to suit him just fine then. In the dub, because it’s not obvious enough that Klahadore is a villain, Kaya asks why she can’t see Usopp when he’s her friend. Klahadore then says “’Friends’ are not always what they seem.” before the shot cuts to a closeup of him smiling with ominous music.
They shorten the shot of Jango walking backwards.
They swap Nami’s closeup dialogue and Zoro’s further dialogue because reasons.
As Jango approaches, the shots cut to black with a shutter noise. In the dub, they remove the black and the shutter noises so it just looks like there’s a bunch of frames missing every few seconds. Smooth.
While music replacements are always a pain, I actually like Jango’s weird organ theme music in the dub. It also distracts from the fact that, in the original, they use the same Trigun-esque music sting for Jango in this shot that they used for Zoro a few episodes ago.
Jango asks why he should do his act for a bunch of strangers (that’s…typically how that works). In the dub, he asks why he should perform his act for a bunch of veggies he doesn’t even like, and then he asks where the broccoli is. This might be fine and slightly funny if they ever introduced themselves to him. Outside of their slightly suggestive hairstyles, there’s no way he could’ve known their names were vegetable themed nor that they called themselves ‘The Veggies.’
They remove Zoro’s anger vein.

Wow, the budget for this episode must be really low if they take the time out to focus on the ocean, make the waves sounds, but don’t even make an effort to animate the water. It’s like a storyboard production.
Between when Klahadore asks Jango about the preparations for the plan and Jango confirming that everything’s ready, they cut to Kaya eating some pasta. This is removed from the dub.
After Jango mentions the assassination plan, and after we cut to the zoom-in on Usopp, we cut to a shot of the sky as Usopp says “Assassination!?” before the commercial break. In the dub, maybe because there’s no commercial break here, the shot is removed.
After the commercial, we see a hermit crab fall off a cliff and get some dialogue from Klahadore telling Jango to not call it an assassination. Jango corrects himself and says it will be an accident. We then cut to a wide shot of the cliff Luffy and Usopp are on. These are both removed.
Like they did with Zoro, they change the posts that Klahadore, who shall now be referred to as his Captain name of Kuro because logic and that’s easier to type, from a cross shape into a T shape by erasing the top beam.

We see Kuro’s double get shot up in a hail of bullets. This is obviously removed. And, of course, the guns are painted to look like toys.

They remove another shot of the hermit crab and shorten the pan up shot of Usopp after the response to the line about the pirates waiting for a week.
Despite showing us an execution scene (sans bullets and with painted guns, admittedly) they still refuse to make any concrete insinuations to death. ‘They’ll hurt Kaya!’ Yes, they’ll hurt her. That’s how people get inheritance money.
The imagined scene of the pirates attacking the town and killing Kaya is removed.
A quick flash of the hermit crab and a slight flash to black are removed after Luffy stands up.
Because of commercials, they add in a far away shot from the top of the cliff before they cut back to the closeup of Kuro asking what they heard. This is pretty noticeable considering Usopp and Luffy stood up right before the commercial, yet they’re clearly back to prone position during this shot.
For some reason they put Usopp’s reaction shot to Luffy falling immediately after he loses his balance instead of after the impact. What? Does that make it less scary or something?
They remove a mid-close up of Usopp as he runs, and they completely remove a long flashback of Usopp remembering his times with Kaya, as well as him yelling ‘dammit!’ as he runs towards the village. No clue why except time constraints, and that can’t be it for a reason I’ll explain later on.
They insert a far away shot of Luffy on the ground before the shot of Kuro and Jango’s feet.
They flip the shot of Kuro smiling because….he’s a car. New decree – Anytime a shot is flipped it’s because everything and everyone is a car, so that has to be it.

And we’re now at the ending….except not really. Prepare to be confused. In the original, after Kuro smiles at his ship, we get a shot of Luffy lying in the dirt then another shot of the hermit crab trying to climb up the cliff and falling into the water again (and the resulting water ripple is transferred over to the To Be Continued… screen, which I thought was neat) and that’s it for episode 10.
In the dub, for some reason, they actually had way more time than they had allotted (four minutes (!) to be precise), so they just plucked several scenes from the next episode to construct their ending. That really makes those scene shortenings and removals all the more confusing.
I give 4Kids some leeway when they snip little things here and there. America does jam more commercials into their shows than Japan does, especially when it comes to kids shows because, come on kids, pressure your parents into buying toys, junk food and cards. But I am scratching my head as to where four minutes suddenly vanished to. And I’m watching these episodes side by side.
I really hope this doesn’t mean every episode beyond this will be screwed up thanks to this change, because that would be a gigantic pain in the ass. However, I can almost bet they will be. How else will they make up the (probably ever expanding thanks to scene removals) time differences if they don’t? I can only imagine that they cut so much that eventually they’ll have an episode’s worth of delay and the episodes will finally match perfectly, but the episode number for the dub will be behind by one.
So let me grab episode 11 so we can close out the dub’s episode 10.
As a note, everything that is not in the original version of the matching numbered dub episode and is taken from a following episode was marked in red in the synopsis.

Technically a closeup of Luffy’s hat is removed.
Obviously, the title card is removed also, but I guess I’ll save that for next episode’s SDC.
They cut out a back shot of Ninjin walking and a closeup of Nami’s feet as she hops up on the fence.
They remove the far away shot of Usopp running towards them and the Veggies reacting.
They cut out the shot of the door opening and someone walking out.
Also, the shot of Usopp smiling is right after this shot, which is understandable because all he knows is someone is coming to listen to him. In the dub, they put this shot right after the people start coming outside looking angry and holding brooms and sticks. They meld it with the shot of his face falling that comes after he sees the angry mob.
They cut out several flashes to a flashback shot of Klahadore, in blue.
In the dub, they make Merry, Kaya’s butler who kinda looks like a sheep due to his curly white hair, sometimes make words end in ‘AaaaaAA’ Ya know…like Baaa….
An outer shot of Kaya’s house is removed.
They remove an identical shot of Luffy’s hat. Man, what’s with the hate on Luffy’s hat?
Aw, they got rid of a funny line. As they find Luffy, Piiman yells out “The straw hat guy!” and Ninjin says “and his butt”. In the dub, he just says “It sure is.”
Because of them screwing up the timeline, the episode ends in the dub with Nami looking horrified at the sight of Luffy. They put a cliffhanger on whether he’s dead or not. We know he’s rubber. We know he’s fine. Any kid paying attention would know this.

This episode was alright. It’s obvious there’s something not right about Klahadore from the get-go and his plan is rather smart, though you’re left to wonder why he’s intent on getting this money ‘legitimately’ and seems to not want to be a pirate anymore, despite still associating with his crew.
A third of this episode was a huge ‘evil plan’ exposition dump, but the beginning was a good insight into Usopp as a character, and the end had tension because you know no one will believe Usopp when he gets back to the village. However, even in the original, they cliffhang Luffy’s fate, and we know he’ll wake up and help save the village somehow.
The fact that four minutes of this episode needs to be taken from episode 11 is an annoying chore that I can’t see going away any time soon unless they BS some extra footage or cut the remaining amount to match the original again. The cliffhanger they made with Usopp was about the same as the original just with confirmation that the villagers won’t believe him. Being fair, the cliffhanger about Luffy’s fate is also similar, even though we know he’s fine. The slight ‘boy who cried wolf’ moral is a bit cliché….I mean, it’s so cliché it has its own name.
Next episode, more things go wrong for poor Usopp, and he’s still the only one who can stop the pirate invasion and save his village as well as Kaya. But he’s not alone for long.
