And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. — 1 Samuel 17:49-50
I played basketball for many years when I was younger. Some seasons were more challenging than others. There were teams that seemed impossible to beat. Year after year they stood between us and where we wanted to go. We knew their names. We knew what it felt like to walk off the court after facing them. They were our giants on the hardwood, the teams that made the rest of us feel smaller than we actually were.
And then one year our team was good. Really good. And we started beating people we had never beaten before. I remember the first time we beat one of those long-standing challenging teams. The moment the buzzer sounded and the scoreboard confirmed what had just happened, something changed in our entire team. It was not just relief. It was like an enormous weight lifted from all of us at once. A weight we had been carrying so long we had almost forgotten it was there. The giant had fallen. And the effect was not just individual, it rippled through every single person on that court.
That is exactly what happened in the valley of Elah. After forty days of taunting. After an entire army stood paralyzed and afraid. After the armor was laid down and the stones were chosen and the declaration was spoken and David ran, it was over in a single moment. One stone. One throw. And Goliath fell on his face to the earth.
The text makes a point worth noticing. There was no sword in the hand of David. The victory was not won with conventional weapons. Not through military strategy or superior firepower or the kind of strength the world recognizes. A stone. A sling. The name of the LORD. The most unlikely combination imaginable produced the most complete victory possible.
And when Goliath fell, something happened to the Philistine army. They fled. The giant whose presence had paralyzed Israel for forty days was gone, and suddenly the enemy that had seemed so formidable scattered in every direction. One young man’s victory with one stone changed the entire landscape of the battle for everyone watching.
The fall of a giant is never just personal. It always impacts the people around you. The teammate who sees you finally beat the unbeatable opponent and believes for the first time that they can too. The person in your life who has been watching you face your giant from a distance and drawing courage or despair from what they observe. The community that is changed when one person stops standing still and runs toward what everyone else has been afraid to engage.
Your victory is not just for you. When the stone finally lands, when the thing that has been looming over you for weeks or months or years finally falls, that moment deserves to be received with full awareness of what just happened. Not pride in your own ability. Awe at the God who guided the stone. Because the giant did not fall because you were strong enough. It fell because He was faithful enough.
There was no sword in the hand of David. The weapon the world would have required was nowhere to be found. And the giant fell anyway.
Your giant will fall the same way. Not because of what you bring. Because of who goes with you. And when it does, someone watching will finally believe that theirs can too.
