Bay Brewing Freedom : Background

Bay Brewing Freedom is a 5% West Coast Pilsner from Bay Brewing Yokohama based in Totsuka, Kanagawa. It’s part of their Uncle Rinne lineup and is available in both cans and on draught. Using Citra and Mosaic as the main hops, alongside Loral and Saphir hops, it takes its name from the idea of freedom that having a bicycle gives you.

Bay Brewing Freedom : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste

Bay Brewing Freedom poured out a golden straw colour with a plump white head on top, that consisted of small to medium sized bubbles that popped away, leaving a thin layer of white bubbles on top, and around the edge of the glass.

The aroma was a mixture of clean malt sweetmess, that was light in aroma but noticeable, and a flurry of mixed hoppy aromas that had a base of citrus – grapefruit and lemon – and some light tropical notes. As Bay Brewing Freedom warmed up, the hoppiness began to take over the flavour profile of the beer, with the sweetness being pushed into an after thought and barely noticeable.

I was expecting a smooth bitterness, and what I got was a short snappy punch that faded to a well-rounded and smooth flavour that had a light backbone of malt sweetness to it. A short snappy hoppy hit of citrus and tropical notes was in the body from start to finish, lingering on into the aftertaste for a fleeting moment. I would have liked some more of a lingering flavour in the end, but the body was nice during drinking.

Bay Brewing Freedom : The Bottom Line

This is a solid beer but the end was a touch disappointing in the end – maybe the beer needs another sprocket to help it get into a bigger gear.
