Brooddark’s fourth release in the last two years is a suffocating mixture of thick, bass-heavy drones, short melodic structures, and background effects. Indeed, Elusive Power announces itself with wall-shaking low frequencies before settling into a loose structural pattern across its seven tracks.
The drones are omnipresent, underlying or driving the vast majority of the album’s running time. These are dark, dense, and oppressive. But each piece also includes a fragment or strain of synth notes, usually just a few, that repeat enough to provide a distinct character. Accompanying these aspects are aleatoric percussion and processed electroacoustic noises (perhaps from field recordings) that add a degree of grittiness and unpredictability.
Case in point, Derecho employs rough-hewn drones and an ominous pitch-drifting motif that reiterates itself every few seconds. As the track progresses, the motif takes on a more urgent nature and synth elements buzz and vibrate anxiously. One can imagine the destructive winds invoked by the title approaching to a siren’s warning.
The result is a deep, dramatic album that overwhelms but also intrigues. Brooddark eschews sudden shocks in favor of slow-building dread, and it is hard to listen to Elusive Power without being drawn into its vision of danger emerging from the horizon.
