Urashima Brewery : Background
Urashima Brewery is a small brewery in Kanagawa-ku, Yokohama, founded by brewer Kobayashi-san. The brewery has a strong local connection: the site was formerly occupied by a barber shop run by Kobayashi-san’s grandmother. The brewery obtained its brewing licence was granted in April 2023, with Kobayashi-san brewing his first batch in June and completing the first beer in August. The brewery officially opened on 11th November 2023, combining a small brewing operation with an equally small taproom, with space for around 10 people, though it’s close quarters in there.
There is a particularly nice family connection to the location. The brewery occupies the former site of a barber shop that was run by Kobayashi’s grandmother, meaning that while Urashima may be a relatively new brewery in the area, its roots in the neighbourhood go back considerably further. Kobayashi-san operates on a deliberately small scale, with three 200-litre fermentation tanks. This allows him to brew in small batches and experiment while remaining closely connected to the customers who visit the taproom.
Urashima began making a name for itself around Yokohama, appearing at the Higashi-Kanagawa Beer Festival in 2024 before joining the Yokohama Craft Beer Association in 2025. For Kobayashi-san, the brewery, and the taproom too, represent the culmination of several years of brewing experience, brought back to the neighbourhood where his family already had deep roots.
