What Is a Distraction?
Anything that pulls your attention from God; His purpose and plans for your life, is a distraction.
The thing with distractions is that you can get caught up in them, fully occupied, very busy, and yet you’re not headed in the right direction. Distractions steal your focus and will ultimately stop you from attaining God’s best!
Whether they come from external pulls or from internal impulses, distractions don’t always come shouting as distractions; they can be subtle, attractive, sometimes relaxing/convenient, urgent, persistent, reasonable, while leading you away from what matters most.
Martha was distracted from the Word of life by good service delivered at the wrong time (Luke 10:40-42). This suggests that a service faithfully rendered to ‘God and men’, might be a distraction.
That ‘lovely relationship’, may be a distraction. That offer that looks like a golden opportunity, may be a distraction. That exciting/pleasurable activity or endeavor, may be a distraction.
Giving too much attention to Worries, is a distraction (Luke 21:34). Spending too much time on the phone is definitely a distraction….
Peter was distracted from his miracle by worry, doubt and fear (Matthew 14:30). But Nehemiah resisted distraction by maintaining his focus on his God-given purpose (Nehemiah 6:3).
Today, resist distractions
Keep your eyes on your heavenly goal (Hebrews 12:2, Colossians 3:2).
