Byars, Sanchez, Shores, Tordin: Analyzing USWNT call-ups

The U.S. women’s national team will enter their October friendly double-header against Spain with a few new faces in the squad.

Head coach Emma Hayes called up Trinity Byars of the San Diego Wave, Evelyn Shores of Angel City, and Pietra Tordin of the Portland Thorns, all for the first time. Ashley Sanchez also made a much-anticipated return. Enjoying a career-best season with the North Carolina Courage, Sanchez makes the squad for the first time since January 2025.

What is the context behind these four call-ups, and what will they bring to the national team?

Trinity Byars

Byars has enjoyed an excellent 2026 campaign with San Diego, having sat out much of 2025 while recovering from an ACL injury. The 23-year-old has played off the left of San Diego’s front three at times, but is naturally a striker and has found the net 10 times this season, all from open play.
