Manchester United Defeat: Atlético Madrid Win 2-0

Atlético Madrid beat 10-man Manchester United 2-0 in the Champions League after Pablo Barrios scored inside the first minute and Ademola Lookman added a late second following Leny Yoro’s dismissal. The Guardian’s match report records Barrios’ opener after 53 seconds, with Yoro sent off on 74 minutes and Lookman scoring three minutes later.

The defeat adds to a season in which United have made their worst start in 40 years in the Premier League. Their defensive weaknesses were exposed almost immediately in Madrid.

United’s defensive issues heading into the Atlético match

Atlético punished United’s early gaps

Lee Kang-in’s pass released Álex Baena into open space on the left. Baena drove into the area and cut the ball back for Barrios, whose effort took a deflection off Ayden Heaven on its way into the net.

United had opportunities to respond. Bryan Mbeumo sent one chance wide before Jan Oblak saved another, while Bruno Fernandes later lifted a one-on-one opportunity wide and struck the crossbar. Carlos Baleba also headed a corner straight at Oblak.

Atlético had 66% of possession by half-time and threatened to extend their lead. Álex Grimaldo struck the bar with a free-kick, and Johnny Cardoso’s goal was ruled out after VAR identified a Marcos Llorente handball in the buildup.

The scoreline at the break gave United a route back, but the hosts continued to find space. Barrios set up Julián Álvarez early in the second half, only for his volley to hit a post.

Yoro’s red card came after a difficult night

Fernandes had another chance to level the match after Youri Tielemans played him through, but his finish went wide. United’s captain then hit the bar as the visitors briefly enjoyed more possession, without finding an equaliser.

On 74 minutes, Yoro and Jonathan David grappled as they ran toward goal and both went to ground. Referee Glenn Nyberg initially allowed play to continue, then reviewed the incident at the pitchside monitor and sent Yoro off. The Guardian described the decision as harsh.

Atlético struck again three minutes later. Grimaldo found David in the area, Senne Lammens saved his shot, and Lookman converted the rebound. The sequence ended United’s hopes of recovering, but the home side had controlled long spells before the dismissal.

A setback in a poor start

Michael Carrick had expected his players to respond to the challenge in Madrid. Instead, Atlético’s opener exposed a familiar lack of defensive pressure: Baena was allowed to advance into the box, and Barrios arrived unmarked to finish.

The red card worsened the situation, but it did not account for the earlier gaps or the chances United failed to take. As the match report noted, the late dismissal could offer some mitigation; it could not alter the result.
