Autumn in the Lake District | Grasmere, William Wordsworth and Rydal

The best portion of a good man’s life: his little, nameless unremembered acts of kindness and love.

– William Wordsworth

In October I visited the Lake District. On my first day I visited the beautiful village of Grasmere, the famous Gingerbread shop that has been selling its produce since the 19th century. I also visited William Wordsworth’s grave as well as the museum dedicated to him and Dove Cottage where he used to live. I then followed a trail to the Rydal Cave and afterwards I went to Rydal to see Rydal Mount, one of other places where William Wordsworth lived towards the end of his life but unfortunately it was closed on the day I visited. However I managed to see the famous Grot and Waterfall at Rydall Hall. I then took the bus to Windermere where I was staying. I ended up my day reading the journal by Dorothy Wordsworth, William’s sister which I bought at the museum that I visited earlier during the day. During my visit I heard the passages read from Dorothy’s journal and her words moved me deeply so I decided to purchase her journal.

I hope this little recording will bring you a glimpse you into the Lake District and the beautiful village of Grasmere. Walking across the hills I understood why this place had such a huge impact on William Wordsworth and many other writers and artists and why he found this landscape so soul soothing.

Dreams, books, are each a world; and books, we know,
Are a substantial world, both pure and good:
Round these, with tendrils strong as flesh and blood,
Our pastime and our happiness will grow.

– William Wordsworth
