Kyoto Brewing Movember : Background
Kyoto Brewing Movember is a 9% Baltic Porter from Kyoto Brewing Company, who are based in Kyoto, Japan. The beer is part of their canned and draught lineup; unfortunately, it’s also part of their limited lineup. This means it may have sold out by the time you have read this writeup about it. Brewed with Two Rabbits Brewing Company, it is made for Movember, an annual event where men around the world grow, or attempt to grow, a moustache in the name of charity. The Japanese name for this beer (太い長く)refers to a phrase roughly translated as “thick and short”. The beer is brewed with Flex alongside Hallertau Mittelfruh hops, and contains brown sugar, raw barley, and raw rye.

Kyoto Brewing Movember : Appearance
The beer poured out a pitch black colour, adorned by a bif, frothy tan coloured head, which consisted of a mixture of small and middle sized bubbles. Additionally, those bubbles condensed down to a thick layer on top, which I imagine would leave a frothy layer of head on anyone drinking this with a moustache.
Kyoto Brewing Movember : Aroma
A bold, dark roasted malt aroma was present from start to finish, punctuated by a layer of coffee and chocolate, though much lighter than an imperial stout level. I did not notice any hop aroma, but there was a touch of toffee and caramel once the beer had warmed up.
Kyoto Brewing Movember : Taste
Wonderfully balanced between the coffee and chocolate flavours, as well as the toffee and caramel like flavours. Even though it topped out at 9%, I couldn’t detect any alcohol heat either in the aroma or the body of this beer. Lastly, with it being a touch lighter than an imperial stout, it was an easy drinking beer that just lightly lingered on the palate.
