Trafalgar Releasing is bringing Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem to Canadian theatres this December. The hour-long animated musical was originally released on home video in 2003 by EMI, combining the works of French electronica duo Daft Punk and anime creator Leiji Matsumoto. This mark’s the film’s first wide theatrical release, in what is intended to be a global event.
Interstella 5555 was directed by Kazuhisa Takenouchi with supervision from Leiji Matsumoto at Toei Animation. The script was written by Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter alongside collaborator Cédric Hervet. The group’s album Discovery is used as the score.
The French electronic dance pop duo Daft Punk combine their musical talents with the visual stylings of anime pioneer Leiji Matsumoto to create a multimedia anime extravaganza that spans countries, and even galaxies! The entire 14 track Daft Punk album “Discovery” is paired with anime created by Space Battleship Yamato and Captain Harlock creator Leiji Matsumoto to tell the story of an intergalactic pop group kidnapped and brought to Earth to perform.
The film will be immediately followed by a curated selection of iconic Daft Punk videos from directors including Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Seb Janiak, Roman Coppola, and Warren Fu.
