Conwy in North Wales « neverimitate

Having enjoyed a month of hibernation following the festive season – with just the one night out to celebrate one of his young bearer’s birthdays – Edward was delighted to be off on his travels again. His first destination of the year was to be Conwy in the stunning Snowdonia National Park. As well as mountains, this Welsh county borough borders the Irish Sea. Edward does like to be beside the seaside.

The car journey to North Wales is long with the final roads being both narrow and winding. It was therefore some relief when a rest stop was made at a café near some waterfalls and a river confluence – that the bearers went off to admire. Edward enjoyed a well deserved tasty treat and posed by a sign that reminded him why Wales is such a favoured destination.

The next stage of the journey was somewhat troublesome, with roadworks and road closures causing delays. Eventually, however, the hotel that was to be his base for the next few days was reached. Edward was welcomed by the resident bear and could then relax on the big bed provided.

After dinner and a good night’s sleep our bear awoke feeling refreshed. The day’s weather looked promising and a long walk was planned. Pulling up his hood to ensure his ears stayed warm Edward climbed into his travel bag.

Starting at Deganwy, the day was spent circumnavigating the Great Orme Peninsula. Seals were spotted playing in the sea and many unusual birds flew by. The overhanging rock formations around the headland were particularly impressive. When Llandudno was eventually reached Edward made the acquaintance of the Mad Hatter.

Another highlight was the abundance of level crossings in the small town, and the regular trains that shuttled across the lines. Edward likes trains and often feels sad that the the service in his hometown is no longer reliable.

With tired legs but full of happy new experiences Edward returned to his hotel. Here he enjoyed a small snack before returning to his room for a rest. His friend Compton had been looking out for Edward, eager to hear all about his exciting day.

On Saturday morning it was time for Compton to go out with the bearers while Edward enjoyed a lie in. The local parkrun at Conwy had been cancelled – due to ice across the paths – so they travelled instead to a castle at Penrhyn. Compton may not have captured the castle – he is not keen on invasion as his English forbears were – but he relished being in such an impressive location.

Back at the hotel and feeling well rested Edward decided to explore the hotel grounds. He found a swing and some pretty flowers. Realising the day was St. Brigid’s he spent time amongst the first stirrings of spring contemplating the turn of the seasons.

Wales has many sheep, creatures some blame for denuding the landscape. Edward was pleased to note that sheep he encountered in the hotel could not be blamed for such destructive carnage. They were very friendly and happy to chat.

Being a helpful bear, Edward was happy to assist Chief Bearer when she put together her thoughts on the hotel. If interested you may read these here.

All too soon the final day of this adventure came round and the journey home needed to be faced. Compton and Edward were happy to rest in the car while the bearers went around many shops in Shrewsbury on a futile search for a gift promised to youngest bearer – who was looking after things at home. Our bears wondered if their inability to find a suitable item led to the lack of a welcome home cake on eventual arrival. They were assured this was more down to Youngest Bearer being ill. On hearing this news they did what bears do best and offered comfort and hugs. The poorly patient was most appreciative and glad to have them back.
