10 of the best books we read in 2024

Hi friends! ✨ Another year came and went in the blink of an eye and here we are again, reuniting to share our favorite reads this year. It’s been a while since I wrote for the blog properly – even more since Nyx, my sister, joined me, so I’m really excited about that! Hope you’ll enjoy our small recap and please let us know your favorite reads in comments!

2024 reading statistics 📊

Nyx: I’ve read 37 books this year, it’s a lot less than I used to. A few years back, I read one book per week. How the hell did I ever manage that?! Anyway, it’s a bit harder now with life and everything but I always told myself “no pressure!”. Reading is supposed to be fun, it’s not supposed to be about numbers!

Anyway, I’ve read pretty great books this year especially my sister’s debut novel!!! Ugh, I’ve never been so proud! I’m excited to enter 2025 and discover more amazing stories!

Marie: My reading year has been, just like my year as a whole, a bit of a complicated roller coaster. I haven’t read this little in, like, 10 years maybe and it kind of breaks my heart? Yet, I also know that my mind got busy with other things, publishing my first novel being one of them, so I guess that’s okay?

I read 45 books total – I’ll admit, I could not have read more, I barely made this goal happen. It’s still a pretty good number, I’d say and I found some incredible hits (some of them below), so yay. I also finally found joy in re-reading books, something I hadn’t done in AGES. Most of all, I think I read less, but listened to myself more in terms of what I really want to read, so, that’s good. I know how it sounds, but when you’re surrounded by people screaming books, it’s easy to get influenced!

Nyx’s 5 Best Books Read in 2024 🌟

Us Against the Likes, Marie Voinson

📖 CLICK TO READ THE SYNOPSIS:

An (anxious) travel influencer, a sister (first and forever), a (hopefully) future award winner.

Against her mother’s wishes, Abby Martins drops out of university to follow her dream: share her travel stories with the world.
With over 90 000 followers and her sister’s help, a talented photographer and her forever best friend, Abby’s thriving on this new path. She’s managing her anxiety (for the most part) and she’s (almost) making a living out of her passion.
Winning a prestigious travel influencer award might just be the thing to push her off that ledge.
Desperate to prove herself, Abby steps out of her comfort zone. From Scotland to Italy, from unexpected influencer trips to thrilling collaborations, Abby stretches herself and her own mental health thin for the likes.

But what, and most importantly, who, will she risk to lose on her way?

Us Against The Likes is a heartwarming college-aged YA book about how social media shapes us – and changes us. Perfect for fans of Amelia Diane Coombs and Kara McDowell.

My awesome little sister’s debut novel!! And no, I’m not biased at all! I’ve read enough books to know a good one and this one is fantastic! This story is all about the unbreakable bond between sisters, the every day struggle of anxiety and how social media can become too consuming. The writing is filled with emotions, I just couldn’t read fast enough! If you’re into contemporary, I 100% recommend!

Confessions of an Alleged Good Girl, Joya Goffney

📖 CLICK TO READ THE SYNOPSIS:

The second novel about a preacher’s daughter in small-town Texas and her journey toward loving herself and her body.
Monique is a preacher’s daughter who detests the impossible rules of her religion. Everyone expects her to wait until marriage, so she has no one to turn to when she discovers that she physically can’t have sex.

After two years of trying and failing, her boyfriend breaks up with her. To win him back, Monique teams up with straight-laced church girl Sasha–who is surprisingly knowledgeable about Monique’s condition–as well as Reggie, the misunderstood bad boy who always makes a ruckus at church, and together they embark upon a top-secret search for the cure.

While on their quest, Monique discovers the value of a true friend and the wonders of a love that accepts her for who she is. Despite everyone’s opinions about her virtue, she learns to live for herself.

This book is a real gem! It’s about a preacher’s daughter in small-town Texas and her journey toward loving herself and her body. It totally took me by surprise, it was heartfelt and inspiring. I loved the characters, the friendships and how the romance blossomed. I laughed and even shed a few tears. A genuine story of self love, body positivity and found family.

Past Present Future, Rachel Lynn Solomon

📖 CLICK TO READ THE SYNOPSIS:

They fell for each other in just twenty-four hours. Now Rowan and Neil embark on a long-distance relationship during their first year of college in this romantic, dual points of view sequel to Today Tonight Tomorrow .

When longtime rivals Rowan Roth and Neil McNair confessed their feelings on the last day of senior year, they knew they’d only have a couple months together before they left for college. Now summer is over, and they’re determined to make their relationship work as they begin school in different states.

In Boston, Rowan is eager to be among other aspiring novelists, learning from a creative writing professor she adores. She’s just not sure why she suddenly can’t seem to find her voice.

In New York, Neil embraces the chaos of the city, clicking with a new friend group more easily than he anticipated. But when his past refuses to leave him alone, he doesn’t know how to handle his rapidly changing mental health—or how to talk about it with the girl he loves.

Over a year of late-night phone calls, weekend visits, and East Coast adventures, Rowan and Neil fall for each other again and again as they grapple with the uncertainty of their new lives. They’ve spent so many years at odds with each other—now that they’re finally on the same team, what does the future hold for them?

This one focuses on long-distance relationships. It’s a vibrant romance but it also portrays mental health challenges. Alternating between Rowan and Neil’s perspectives, Rachel Lynn Solomon masterfully captures the essence of young adulthood and how hard it is to find your place in the world. I absolutely loved the romance, it felt real and honest! My heart was very happy!

Where Are You, Echo Blue, Hayley Krischer

📖 CLICK TO READ THE SYNOPSIS:

A smart, juicy, and page-turning novel about celebrity, fandom, and the price of ambition following a journalist’s obsessive search for a missing Hollywood starlet

When Echo Blue, the most famous child star of the nineties, disappears ahead of a highly publicized television appearance on the eve of the millennium, the salacious theories instantly start swirling. Mostly, people assume Echo has gotten herself in trouble after a reckless New Year’s Eve. But Goldie Klein, an ambitious young journalist who also happens to be Echo’s biggest fan, knows there must be more to the story. Why, on the eve of her big comeback, would Echo just go missing without a trace?

After a year of covering dreary local stories for Manhattan Eye, Goldie is sure this will be her big break. Who better to find Echo Blue, and tell her story the right way, than her? And so, Goldie heads to L.A. to begin a wild search that takes her deep into Echo’s complicated life in which parental strife, friend break ups, rehab stints, and bad romances abound. But the further into Echo’s world Goldie gets, the more she questions her own complicity in the young star’s demise . . . yet she cannot tear herself away from this story, which has now consumed her entirely. Meanwhile, we also hear Echo’s side of things from the beginning, showing a young woman who was chewed up and spit out by Hollywood as so many are, and who may have had to pay the ultimate price.

As these young women’s poignant and unexpected journeys unfold, and eventually meet, Where Are You, Echo Blue? interrogates celebrity culture, the thin line between admiration and obsession, and what it means to tell other peoples’ stories, all while ushering us on an unruly ride to find out what did become of Echo Blue.

A novel about celebrity, fandom, and the price of ambition? I was all in and it didn’t disappoint! We follow a journalist’s obsessive search for a missing Hollywood starlet and I was hooked from page one. It was such an unique read full of complicated characters and personal growth.

All the Best Liars, Amelia Kahaney

📖 CLICK TO READ THE SYNOPSIS:

A dark, modern psychological thriller and coming-of-age about obsession, manipulation, and the intensity of those first friendships that take hold of you and never let go

Tic tac toe, three girls in a row. Nine years old and inseparable. Friends for life, or so they think . . .

Best friends Syd, Rain, and Brie grew up on the wrong side of the tracks in the stifling California desert, desperately wishing for a way out.

In the end, each of them will escape—but not in the way they expect. One will do it by dying, another by lying, a third by taking the fall. A deadly fire is set two weeks before the end of their senior year of high school and nothing will ever be the same.

With gorgeous, taut prose and twists to the very last page, All the Best Liars switches between the present and the past to unravel the truth behind the fire and the cost of the secrets at heart of their friendship.

This one is a thriller about obsession, manipulation, and the intensity of those first friendships that take hold of you and never let go. It was twisted and addictive, I absolutely adored it! The characters were flawed, the narrative intense, I just couldn’t read fast enough. If you’re a fan of Pretty Little Liars, this one is perfect for you!

Our Infinite Fates, Laura Steven

📖 CLICK TO READ THE SYNOPSIS:

The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue meets This is How You Lose The Time War in this fantastical love story that defies death as two souls reincarnate through the centuries.

They’ve loved each other in a thousand lifetimes. They’ve killed each other in every one.

Evelyn remembers all her past lives. She also remembers that in every single one, she’s been murdered before her eighteenth birthday by Arden, a supernatural being whose soul―and survival―is tethered to hers.

The problem is that she’s quite fond of the life she’s in now, and her little sister needs her for bone marrow transplants in order to stay alive. If Evelyn wants to save her sister, she’ll have to:

1. Find the centuries-old devil who hunts her through each life―before they find her first.
2. Figure out why she’s being hunted and finally break their curse.
3. Try not to fall in love.

Cheating because this releases in 2025 but whatever. This one got its fair share of hype in the past few months and, let me tell you, I think it’s well deserved. It’s one of the most unique, spellbinding, mesmerizing story I’ve ever read, it’s heartbreaking and original and, like, woah. Obsessed, truly. Loved it.

The Goldens, Lauren Wilson

📖 CLICK TO READ THE SYNOPSIS:

Chloe has always dreamed of becoming a bestselling writer. Then she meets enigmatic influencer Clara Holland, and at last, Chloe has something to write about. They bond instantly, and Chloe moves into Clara’s mansion. But as Clara’s fame skyrockets, she starts behaving strangely, hosting increasingly wild parties, complete with bonfire rituals and moonlit river baptisms.

Clara opens up her home to other girls desperate to live like her. The media call it a cult, and soon Chloe begins to hear unsettling rumours from Clara’s past. After one spectacular party, a girl goes missing and the rumours take on a sinister new meaning. If Chloe can’t escape Clara’s influence, she may be next…

The Goldens is about to become your newest obsession.

The Goldens was a stunning debut, artfully dealing with toxic friendships, obsession, fame and the things you’ll do for the ones you love. It’s really… well, truly the word is obsession, here, because I was obsessed with this book and could not stop reading. Loved it.

The Someday Daughter, Ellen O’Clover

📖 CLICK TO READ THE SYNOPSIS:

From the critically acclaimed author of Seven Percent of Ro Devereux comes another nuanced, heartrending, and ultimately healing novel, about a rising college freshman forced to spend a summer with the self-help superstar mother she’s never felt truly connected to.

Years before Audrey St. Vrain was born, her mother, Camilla, shot to fame with Letters to My Someday Daughter, a self-help book encouraging women to treat themselves with the same love and care they’d treat their own daughters. While the world considers Audrey lucky to have Camilla for a mother, the truth is that Audrey knows a different side of being the someday daughter. Shipped off to boarding school when she was eleven, she feels more like a promotional tool than a member of Camilla’s family.

Audrey is determined to create her own identity aside from being Camilla’s daughter, and she’s looking forward to a prestigious summer premed program with her boyfriend before heading to college and finally breaking free from her mother’s world. But when Camilla asks Audrey to go on tour with her to promote the book’s anniversary, Audrey can’t help but think that this is the last, best chance to figure out how they fit into each other’s lives—not as the someday daughter and someday mother, but as themselves, just as they are.

What Audrey doesn’t know is that spending the summer with Camilla and her tour staff—including the disarmingly honest, distressingly cute video intern, Silas—will upset everything she’s so carefully planned for her life.

Ellen O’Clover never fails at making me cry, truly. The Someday Daughter snuck up on me in ways I didn’t expect it to. I loved the complex mother daughter relationship, the mental health & perfectionism commentary, anxiety rep on point and just, I loved this.

I love books dealing with fame, celebrity, fandom and everything like that and one this certainly delivered. I couldn’t stop reading about that child star and that slightly obsessed journalist. Such a compelling story.

We rarely get stories about what happens once the couple gets together… and tries to handle long distance so I absolutely loved that. These characters have my heart and both of their growth, both as individuals and as a couple, made my heart swoon. Loved it.
