Winter Weather Alert Update: Full Advisory and Warning Summary for Alabama, Mississippi, and Western and Middle Tennessee : The Alabama Weather Blog


WINTER WEATHER SETUP – WHAT’S CAUSING THIS WINTRY MIX POTENTIAL

A strong upper-level shortwave trough is driving precipitation across the Southeast, producing a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain tonight into Wednesday morning. Arctic air will plunge in behind the system, leading to dangerous wind chills and very cold overnight lows Wednesday and Thursday nights.

  • NWS Birmingham: Wintry precipitation expected north of Highway 278, with possible slick roads for the morning commute on Wednesday.
  • NWS Huntsville: Wintry mix across the Tennessee Valley with snow and ice, causing hazardous travel conditions starting after midnight tonight.
  • NWS Nashville (Middle Tennessee): 2-4 inches of snow in the winter storm warning area with up to 2 inches in the advisory area, followed by bitterly cold wind chills.
  • NWS Memphis (Western Tennessee/Northern Mississippu): 3-6 inches of snow with some ice as well in the warning area, with up to 2 inches of snow and alight glaze of ice in the advisory area, followed by bitterly cold wind chills.
  • NWS Peachtree City (North Georgia): Light snow possible with accumulations up to 1 inch in higher elevations, followed by bitterly cold wind chills.

  • Winter Weather Advisory: 9 PM Tuesday – 9 AM Wednesday
  • Counties: Marion, Winston, Blount, Etowah, Cherokee, Lamar, Fayette, Walker
  • Forecast: Up to 1 inch of snow, light ice glaze

?? NWS HUNTSVILLE (Tennessee Valley):

  • Winter Weather Advisory: 9 PM Tuesday – 11 AM Wednesday
  • Counties: Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, Marshall, Jackson, DeKalb, Cullman
  • Forecast: Up to 1 inch of snow, sleet, and freezing rain

  • Winter Storm Warning: 9 PM Tuesday – Noon Wednesday
  • Counties: Stewart, Montgomery, Robertson, Sumner, Davidson, and areas north of I-40
  • Forecast: 2 to 4 inches of snow, up to 6 inches possible northwest
  • Winter Weather Advisory (South of I-40): 9 PM Tuesday – Noon Wednesday
  • Counties: Putnam, Williamson, Rutherford, and surrounding areas
  • Forecast: Up to 2 inches of snow

  • Winter Storm Warning: Noon Tuesday – Noon Wednesday
  • Counties: Shelby (Memphis), Tipton, Dyer, and nearby areas
  • Forecast: 3 to 6 inches of snow with ice
  • Winter Weather Advisory: Noon Tuesday – Noon Wednesday
  • Counties: DeSoto, Marshall, and other North MS areas
  • Forecast: Up to 2 inches of snow, light ice glaze

  • Winter Weather Advisory: 1 AM Wednesday – 1 AM Thursday
  • Counties: Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, Chattooga, Gordon, Pickens, Dawson, Lumpkin, White, Floyd
  • Forecast: 0.5 inch of snow with up to 1 inch above 2500 feet

Following the winter weather event, Arctic air will cause frigid temperatures:

  • Thursday & Friday Mornings: Lows in the teens and 20s across the region
  • Wind Chill: Single digits to lower teens across North Alabama, Tennessee, and North Georgia
