CBI arrested GST Superintendent for Demanding and Accepting Bribe

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)’s anti-corruption wing arrested Ravi Ranjan, superintendent GST office, Medak, following a raid on Friday. The agency was investigating a complaint filed by Talari Krishnamurthy, the owner of a hardware company.

Krishnamurthy stated he met with Ravi Ranjan on February 24, 2024, in order to enquire about the suspension of his GST account. Ranjan allegedly informed him that the suspension was due to the complainant’s failure to file Income Tax returns, directed him to do so, and demanded Rs 10,000 to revoke the suspension.

The complainant filed his ITR for June 2024 on December 31, 2024. When Krishnamurthy failed to pay the bribe, Ranjan allegedly texted SMS on January 8. When Krishnamurthy called the official on February 5, Ranjan reaffirmed his demand for a bribe of Rs.10,000.

Ranjan eventually compromised on Rs.8,000, which he wanted to be transferred to Rinki Devi’s mobile number.

Krishnamurthy said that, despite having filed GST returns on time, the officer had not revoked his suspension because he did not comply with Ranjan’s demand.

Based on the complaint, CBI officials filed a case against Ranjan under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
