I’m excited to share a new instructional resource that I’ve developed in collaboration with Dr. Melissa Larson from Brigham Young University: a collection of Form 10-K exercises for introductory accounting courses. These short assignments help students build comfort working with real company financials from SEC filings. We have created step-by-step tutorial videos for each exercise that guide the student through the Form 10-K information that is relevant for that exercise.
Each of the six exercises—four for introductory financial accounting and two for introductory managerial accounting—guides students through the use of actual Form 10-K data from companies such as Home Depot, Costco, Walmart, Delta Airlines, Lowe’s, and Topgolf Callaway Brands. The goal is to help students develop analytical skills and gain confidence interpreting real-world data. Each exercise is designed to take about 15–20.
What’s Included:
- Student-ready assignments with links to the Form 10-k and tutorial videos.
- Step-by-step video tutorials (3–6 minutes each) that demonstrate how to navigate the Form 10-K to obtain the information needed for the exercise.
- An instructor guide with the exercises and suggested answers.
Flexible Assignment Options:
Instructors can:
- Use the exercises exactly as written, using the fiscal year featured in the video.
- Assign the same company but ask students to analyze a different fiscal year.
- Substitute a different company entirely while keeping the same question structure.
This flexibility makes it easy to adapt the assignments for online or in-person classes, and for different semesters or course formats.
Where to Get the Materials:
If you’d like a copy of the instructor guide (which includes the student exercises and solutions), please fill out the brief form at this link. We send out the materials about once a week – and be sure to check your spam folder since the responses often end up in spam.
We hope you find these Form 10-K exercises helpful!
