The importance of taking action: a lesson from a procrastinating accountant

I recently reconnected with an accountant who first reached out to me six months ago. Back then, we discussed his challenges, and I shared specific advice tailored to his situation. When we spoke again, I discovered that his problems hadn’t changed.

He admitted he hadn’t taken action. Not because my advice was difficult or costly, but simply, he admitted, because he hadn’t made change a priority. Instead, he focused, as he had always done, on client work, which, while necessary, did little to improve his state of mind or his practice.

Now, six months later, he sees the same advice as just as valuable. But the urgency has grown. He realises that wishing, hoping, and even budgeting for change aren’t enough.

Maybe this resonates with you.

Are there things you would like to be different in your practice? Would you like more/better clients? Higher fees per client? To be able to focus on different services? To be able to get away from the office without worrying about things? To have more time to spend with family/friends?  To prepare the practice for sale or retirement? To get a second opinion as regards your plans? To sense-check your ideas?  The list is almost endless.

There is some truth in the old adage that if you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll only get what you’ve always got.

Actually, I have long challenged that theory. The world of accountancy is always changing and evolving. Perhaps never more so than today. So, if you carry on doing what you’ve always done, IF YOU ARE LUCKY, you will carry on getting what you’ve always got. But, it’s just as likely that your rewards will start to drop and you’ll get LESS than you used to get, even if you carry on working just as hard.

The cost of inaction
We’ve all been there. It’s easy to put things off, waiting for the ‘right time’ to make changes. But delaying action only delays results.

Real plans must include, not just ideas but, the steps you’ll take to implement them. Without action, even the best strategies are just words on a page. The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll see progress.

Small steps, big results
Taking action doesn’t always mean making huge changes overnight. Sometimes, small but informed steps can be enough to gain momentum. Other times, certain actions might not move the needle at all. That’s why having guidance, support, and accountability can make all the difference.

If you know you need to make changes but keep putting them off, it might be time to do something different.
