In 2025, writers and directors Guillaume Campanacci and Vesper Egon give us Whenever I’m Alone With You. It is “being Alain and Romy.” A fanciful version of the real life doomed lovers, Alain Delon and Romy Schneider. Delon, dubbed the most beautiful man in the world, lacked the ability to be faithful. Schneider, who was helplessly in love with him, moved on.
She was brokenhearted.
The opening paragraph is my take on this film. I found several clues alluding to Delon. Nothing leads me to Romy, except the basic storyline. Egon may have been portraying a version of Audrey Hepburn, but it does not fit the film I watched.
In my honest opinion.
The story
Guillaume is suicidal. Vedrana is unhappy with her current relationship. The two young people meet. They are kindred spirits. A romantic interlude ensues. Suddenly, an ex lover shows up. She is pregnant with Guillaume’s child. Whenever I’m Alone With You follows their love story.
*Hyped as a “true story,”Whenever I’m Alone With You revolves around Guillaume as an actor trying to kill himself. We are never really sure who Vedrana is.*
The Main Cast
Vesper Egon is Vedrana.
Guillaume Campanacci is Guillaume.
Whenever I’m Alone With You BTS
Cinematographer Nicolas Devienne makes this one feel luxurious. The set pieces change with each “chapter” of this tale. The family scenes feel intimate and involved.
The exterior shots are sumptuous and pull you into this tragic (?) story of love, loss and death. Devienne ensures that both the lead actors are presented in an interesting light.
What works
Campanacci and Egon work well together as the couple who meet under less than romantic circumstances. They do resemble, to a degree, Alain Delon and Romy Schneider. Whenever I’m Alone With You could well be a telling of their love in a different verse. One where they end up together.
I was confused, at times, where the film was heading. I wondered what the underlying message was. The film is entertaining, however, I think I hit the metaphorical nail on the head here.
Whenever I’m Alone With You is a visual treat. It also introduces the intricacies of international relationships. In this case, French vs English. The cultures are different and this film gives us a delightful taste of this.
Both actors, and the secondary cast, sold this tale. At times the familial approach felt so spot on it was magical and the children, delightful.
The Verdict
Whenever I’m Alone With You, for me, is a solid 3.75 stars. I had to watch it a few times to find what I missed. It ran a little long for me and could have had a few things edited out.
That said, it is worth watching to find what you might get from the film. Whenever I’m Alone With You is available to rent on Amazon Prime
