From courtrooms and Parliament to undercover investigations and nationwide campaigns, Animal Justice’s 2025 Year In Review highlights how, together, we drove real change for animals across the country. It was a defining year for animal advocacy in Canada, and Animal Justice was there at every turn.
This year, Animal Justice launched the largest cage-free campaign in Canadian history, fought in court against dangerous ag gag laws, and continued the urgent push to save the remaining whales and dolphins at Marineland. Our investigations exposed abuse inside factory farms, animal labs, and pet breeders—and directly helped many animals escape suffering and find safety.

Standing Up for Animals Used in Research
In 2025, Animal Justice helped whistleblowers expose shocking abuse at a secret dog experimentation lab at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ontario. The investigation forced the lab to close, led to a commitment to rehome the dogs, and inspired Premier Doug Ford to introduce a bill to ban dog and cat experimentation. These efforts built on growing momentum nationwide to end animal testing.
Protecting Farmed Animals
From the Universal Ostrich Farm massacre to drone footage exposing veal crates, Animal Justice brought hidden cruelty into the public eye. We took on major grocery chains like Sobeys over animal abuse in their supply chains, renewed our fight to ban live horse exports for slaughter, and helped defeat a dangerous federal ag gag bill—while defending our court victory against Ontario’s ag gag law.
Defending Companion Animals
Animal Justice challenged Canada’s devastating ban on most international dog rescue and exposed the grim reality of commercial ferret breeding in Manitoba. As a direct result of that investigation, dozens of animals were rescued and placed into loving homes.
Winning for Wildlife
Across Canada, Animal Justice secured major victories for wild animals—including helping end the use of poison Compound 1080 used to kill wolves in Alberta, stopping ground squirrel gassing in Winnipeg, amending illegal penned hunting licenses in Ontario, and filing a lawsuit to end fur farming in Quebec.
Roadside Zoos & Aquariums
2025 marked a watershed moment with the closure of Marineland after decades of neglect. Animal Justice is now working to ensure the remaining belugas and dolphins are safely rehomed and protected. We also pushed for accountability at roadside zoos and rodeos—and continue fighting to free animals still trapped in cruel conditions.
Building a Powerful Movement
This year, our movement grew stronger than ever. We expanded the Animal Law & Advocacy Conference, launched a whistleblower tip line, made animal protection a federal election issue, and strengthened our nationwide Animal Justice Action Team.
None of this would be possible without the support of our supporters. Animal Justice’s 2025 Year In Review is a testament to what compassionate people can achieve together for animals.
We look forward to another huge year for animals with our amazing community by our side.
