CNN’s Hero Of The Year Established A Dog Foster Program To Aid Recovering Addicts In Rehab

Stephen Knight, a former addict who turned his life around and went on to create a nonprofit supporting both pets and people in need, has been named the 2024 CNN Hero of the Year.

This honor recognizes the transformative work he has done through his Texas-based organization, Dogs Matter. Knight’s efforts are now poised to expand even further with a grant of over $100,000, awarded to continue his life-changing mission.

Dogs Matter provides a crucial service: fostering pets for individuals seeking substance abuse treatment. The organization covers all associated pet care expenses for the foster families, ensuring that those in recovery do not have to choose between their own well-being and their beloved animals.

Additionally, the nonprofit offers post-release support to help human participants maintain sobriety, enabling a smoother transition back to daily life.

Knight, reflecting on his surprise win during the 2024 CNN Heroes awards gala in early December, shared his gratitude: “This means everything. I represent so much here: I represent the recovery community, the dog rescue community…This is going to be able to take us to the next level.”

The journey to this moment has been anything but easy for Knight. In 2011, at the age of 51, his life was in complete disarray. Meth addiction had robbed him of his family, career, home, and nearly his life. Living out of his car and HIV-positive, Knight hit rock bottom. At his mother’s urging, he entered rehab, a decision that would ultimately lead to his remarkable turnaround.

However, it wasn’t just the structured treatment program that sparked Knight’s transformation. It was a chance encounter with a dog that provided the emotional connection he needed to heal.

As CNN recounted, “After months of treatment, and at a delicate time in his recovery, a friend showed up at his door in tears. She had relapsed, and in her arms was her beloved dog, Jayde.”

His friend was devastated, knowing she could no longer care for Jayde and asking Knight for help to surrender the dog to a shelter. Knight vividly remembers the moment he met Jayde.

“I looked at Jayde, and we looked at each other,” he told CNN. “It was one of the most spiritual moments, like ‘I think we might need each other here.’”

This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a profound realization for Knight: many people battling addiction delay or forgo treatment because they cannot find suitable care for their pets.

Driven by this insight, Knight founded Dogs Matter in 2015. The organization quickly gained traction, offering a lifeline to individuals and their pets during one of the most vulnerable times of their lives. Now, as Knight approaches 14 years of sobriety, Dogs Matter has already provided support to more than 1,200 dogs and their owners.

The work of Dogs Matter underscores the interconnectedness of human and animal welfare. By ensuring pets are cared for, the organization alleviates one of the significant barriers that prevent individuals from seeking treatment. For many, knowing their pets are safe and loved offers peace of mind, allowing them to focus entirely on their recovery.

Knight’s recognition as CNN Hero of the Year is not only a personal achievement but also a moment to highlight the broader issues Dogs Matter addresses.

His acceptance speech reflected the deep pride and responsibility he feels: “This means everything. I represent so much here. I represent the recovery community (and) the dog rescue community…This is going to be able to take us to the next level.”

In addition to Knight’s award, CNN’s collaboration with the Elevate Prize Foundation offers further opportunities for public involvement. Through January 5, 2025, donations to any of the five semi-finalist Heroes will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $50,000 per individual. So far, over $120,000 has been raised, and the total amount will double thanks to the matching funds.

This partnership ensures that organizations like Dogs Matter can amplify their impact, reaching more individuals and pets in need. For Knight, the increased financial support symbolizes a new chapter in his mission to make a difference in the lives of others.

Stephen Knight’s story is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the profound connection between people and their pets. By creating a nonprofit that bridges the gap between recovery and pet care, he has touched countless lives, proving that second chances are possible—for both humans and animals.
