Minnesota Pawnbroker Receives Rare Chinese Honor For Returning Historic 1937 Massacre Photos—Only Third Westerner Awarded

In an extraordinary turn of events, a Minnesotan pawn shop owner found himself at the center of an international historical revelation, leading to his recognition at one of China’s most prestigious cultural events. Evan Kail, an entrepreneur with a passion for history, stumbled upon a piece of the past that would ultimately connect him with millions in China.

Kail, who runs a pawn shop in Minnesota, acquired a seemingly ordinary photo album in 2022. However, upon closer inspection, he realized that the contents were far from ordinary. The album contained dozens of rare and chilling photographs documenting the Japanese war atrocities committed during the 1937 attack and occupation of Nanking, now known as Nanjing.

The Nanjing Massacre remains a highly sensitive and deeply emotional topic in Chinese history, as it resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians and prisoners of war.

Realizing the historical weight of the images, Kail faced a critical decision: what to do with the album? He had a firm principle when handling World War II artifacts. 

“One of my rules when handling artifacts related to WWII is that if an item has any direct connection to a war crime, or holds potential historical significance, it doesn’t belong in private hands. Instead, it belongs in a museum or a place where it can be studied and preserved for the public,” Kail told China Daily.

Understanding the potential value of these photos beyond his own ability to assess, Kail decided that they needed to be returned to their rightful place. He reached out to the Chinese consulate in Chicago, explaining that the album was an important historical document for the Chinese people and should be repatriated.

Unexpected Challenges and Recognition

Kail’s decision to donate the album drew immense attention, particularly from his followers on TikTok and Instagram, where he frequently shares historical artifacts and stories. However, his discovery also brought unexpected backlash. 

Reports emerged that Kail received bizarre and even threatening messages from individuals who either wanted to obtain the album for themselves or accused him of being a spy for China. The Nanjing Massacre remains a politically charged issue, and some ultranationalist groups, particularly in Japan, have sought to downplay or deny the events.

Despite the controversy, the Chinese government recognized Kail’s actions as a remarkable act of goodwill and historical justice. As a token of appreciation, the Chinese consulate sent Kail a letter of thanks accompanied by an exquisite yellow porcelain tea jar. 

This rare gift is a symbol of high honor, traditionally bestowed upon foreigners who have rendered exceptional service to the Chinese people. The porcelain is crafted using one of the most ancient and revered techniques in Chinese pottery, further underscoring the significance of the recognition.

A Journey of Discovery and Friendship

Kail’s connection to China deepened further when his story gained traction in Chinese media. He admitted that, although he had studied World War II in high school, the suffering of the Chinese people during the conflict had not been a focal point in his education. The overwhelming response from Chinese audiences to his TikTok videos inspired him to learn more about China’s history and culture.

This growing interest culminated in an invitation to visit China in December 2024 as a “global peace advocate.” During his month-long journey, Kail visited several major cities, including Nanjing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Beijing. 

He also had the rare opportunity to attend the Chunwan, China’s annual Lunar New Year’s Gala—a televised event watched by millions across the country. His presence at the gala was a powerful statement of friendship and mutual respect between cultures.

A Warm Welcome from Chinese Officials

Kail’s story caught the attention of Chinese government officials, including the Chinese Ambassador to the United States, who publicly praised him for his generosity and historical awareness.

“It’s great to see Evan, the American who donated a precious WWII photo album to China, at our national Spring Festival Gala this year!” wrote the ambassador on social media.

“Whoever shows kindness to the Chinese people will always be reciprocated with kindness. Evan, you now have 1.4 billion Chinese friends!”

Such words highlighted the profound impact Kail’s gesture had on fostering goodwill between nations. His story served as a reminder that historical artifacts are more than just relics of the past—they are bridges that connect people across time and geography.

A Rare and Historic Honor

The yellow porcelain gift Kail received places him in an exclusive category of Westerners who have been honored in connection with the Nanjing Massacre. 

According to South China Morning Post, only two other foreigners have received similar recognition for their efforts to protect Chinese civilians during the atrocities. This extraordinary acknowledgment underscores the historical significance of Kail’s actions and the value of his decision to preserve and share a crucial piece of history.

Reflecting on his journey, Kail expressed profound gratitude for the experience. “China has made this the proudest thing that I have ever done in my life. This is my greatest achievement in my life,” he told the Global Times.
