a BOLD Perspective is launched in the Isle of Man
Keirron Tastagh, who runs local company Adventurous Experiences,
believes regular exposure to challenge in the outdoors is increasingly part of
‘Island Life’. Keirron has repeatedly championed the benefits of ‘getting
comfortable with challenge’ through accessible adventure sports. “People need
to make that first step in order to begin seeing the benefits”.
In 2017, Adventurous Experiences won the coveted Isle of Man Government Award for ‘Freedom to Flourish’ at the Isle of Man Newspapers Awards for Excellence.
“A key factor in the judge’s
feedback was how we expanded risk utilisation awareness and promoted informed
decision making.” Says Keirron
Sam Murphy, a qualified strength and conditioning coach, also has
a background in leading and coaching people outdoors. “The Award recognised what we have achieved
(so far) in developing decision-making in people. This organically led us to
continue this journey.”
A team of experienced outdoor leaders (based in the Isle of Man
and UK) came together to find a way to better communicate how exposure to real
challenge can positively change the way we view our lives. How this ‘perspective’
allows us to make better decisions and ultimately impact our wellbeing.

Becky Crease was a leader on a Youth Scholarship wilderness expedition
in the Arctic Circle, and saw first-hand how creating the environment to
nurture a bold perspective in people (including young people), enhances their
life-long learning. “BOLD can be
described as a way of looking at things we do and aspire to do. It is different
for each of us.”
Over recent years, developing
a BOLD perspective has appeared more in stories and conversations. “This is the
philosophy the business was built upon (back in 2004), it’s what makes our
practices sustainable and makes us unique.” Keirron Tastagh
‘In
collaboration with local software and digital company PDMS, a new website was built, specifically to share the
Benefits of Outdoor Learning and Development message. BOLD.im also offers 1:1
coaching with Keirron, personalised outdoor prescriptions and signposting to
other BOLD partners.
Adventurous Experiences (which
enters its 19th year in April) will continue to deliver
unforgettable experiences in the summer, and coaching through adventure sport
year-round. ”Our coaches continue to promote and demonstrate a bold
perspective.” Says Keirron.
“A common mis-interpretation of
risk utilisation is ‘going out to take risk’. In actual fact, professionals in
the outdoors work extremely hard to ensure participants are not exposed to
unnecessary risk. As a small business, we continuously strive to improve what
we do, and how we do it. This is how we retain our outstanding safety record.”
