Last week, Tegbi Birthing Clinic held an opening ceremony for its new birthing ward, which was funded through African Adventures Foundation.
The Health Director of the Anloga Health Directorate, community leaders, chiefs, staff, and some patients attended the opening ceremony of Tegbi Birthing Clinic’s new ward, which will provide a safe, hygienic, and comfortable place for local women to give birth.
Each month, around 80 women come to the clinic to give birth but 75% of these cannot afford the fee for their stay. The clinic is a lifeline for many women who cannot afford the higher costs for the local hospital and want the safety of being supported throughout their labour.
Along with funding the construction of the new ward, African Adventures Foundation has provided new maternity beds and an air conditioning unit.
With only a four-bed patient detention room and a constant turnover of patients, space has been severely limited. Now, with the construction of a new ward, the clinic will be able to support more women, ensuring safer and more dignified births. In Ghana’s intense heat, where temperatures regularly soar, giving birth can be incredibly uncomfortable experience. The installation of air conditioning units will provide much needed relief, helping mothers focus on what truly matters- the safe arrival of their babies.
“The new ward and facilities at Tegbi Clinic look amazing and we are delighted that new mothers now have a safe and comfortable space to birth and care for their newborns. It is thanks to generous grant support that this project has been possible, and we look forward to seeing the impact on those in the local area who rely on the support of the clinic.” Rachel Northover, Foundation Manager.
Maternity pack programme
Through our partnership with Tegbi Birthing Clinic, we aim to give babies in Woe the best possible start in life by ensuring that mothers have access to safe birthing facilities and can carry out good hygiene practices for their babies through our maternity pack programme.
Through supporter donations, African Adventures Foundation has provided maternity packs for 35 women this month. Each pack contains:
- Packs of nappies x2
- Sponges x2
- Maternity pads x2
- Cot sheets x6
- Baby soap
- Baby grows x6
- Delivery sheet
- Baby hat
- Baby pomade
- Baby towel
- Dummy
Many of the women who attend the birthing centre are unable to afford the most basic of items for their newborn. At an already challenging time in early motherhood, we want to support mothers with the essential items they need to care for their babies.
It costs just £27 to provide a mother with the essential birthing supplies, which will help her care for her baby properly. To donate, please click here.
