The Bloody Mission is Running the 480km Tassie Trail in 4 Days

Join us for a run and The Bloody Mission afterparty with New Balance in Hobart on the 12th of April!

In 2022 Cal Gates ran the 250km Great North Walk from Sydney to Newcastle to raise money for blood cancer. The Blood Run became a touching feature film that captured Cal’s fundraising efforts after his mother-in-law passed away from acute myeloid lymphoma, a kind of leukaemia.

Now he’s back and this time, it’s gonna be The Bloody Mission. To tackle the Tasmanian Trail on two feet (our writer Taylor has only done it on a bike) Cal’s enlisted a crew of mates, Dan, Matt, Steeley and Jesse, who are aiming to raise $5k each for their efforts.

The effort? Two 50km legs each (within 32 hours), run as a relay, until the thing is done.

Join The Bloody Mission Afterparty!

We are Explorers and New Balance are helping Cal and The Bloody Mission crew throw a huge afterparty in Hobart to celebrate the run. On the 12th of April we’re taking over newly refurbished pub The Waggon in Hobart, with beers supplied by the epic crew from Boags, for a proper hoedown feat. Lawson Hull on guitar, and a chance to hear from Cal and MC Thom Wood.

Oh and of course we’ll go for a trot beforehand! Our mates from New Balance will be there with a testing fleet of their new Fresh Foam X Hierro V9 trail runner, which our social media lord Jack has been cruising around in for the last month or so.

Aim for Greatness

Filmmaker Mitch Gates said it best after making The Blood Run into a film:

‘When I turned 30, I set a goal to create a meaningful feature film by 35. I never anticipated how life-changing the process would be.

Making The Blood Run taught me two key lessons:

  1. Aim for greatness.
  2. Help others do the same.’

We’re on board with Cal’s bloody mission because it has heart. The crew are setting out to raise awareness and much-needed funds for leukaemia research, but they’re also inspiring people to live their own lives to the full. Whether that’s running through 480km of Tasmanian wilderness, running 5km with us on the 12th of April at The Waggon, or some other inspiring goal, it’s a big kick up the arse to get out there. It (probably) doesn’t even have to be running!

Check out the launch video to meet the crew, grab your ticket if you’re local, and throw a donation in the tin.
