Have you ever wondered what it is like to ride a hidden tube network? The City Adventurers were keen discover this unique piece of industrial heritage on a visit to The Postal Museum.
The Postal Museum experience is spread across two sites directly opposite each other. On one side of the road is the Postal Museum containing the story of the Royal Mail with vehicles, uniforms and memorabilia. Located across the road from the museum are the original tunnels and platforms of London’s 100-year-old postal railway. This hidden rail network once transported mail around the city for 22 hours every day.
Our group began their adventure with a ride on the Mail Rail train. We got to see the unchanged station platforms deep below Royal Mail’s Mount Pleasant sorting office. Mail Rail was designed to carry mail, not people, so it was a little cosy boarding the train. The circular journey has an audio commentary describing the work of the train, its routes around London and the people who worked there. After the trip we got to discover the interactive exhibits covering more than 100 years of postal engineering.
Next we headed across the road for lunch in the cafe, before heading into the permanent exhibitions gallery.
The Museum has over 60,000 objects and thousands of records detailing 500 years of postal history. This includes large items such as modes of transport and uniforms to small items such as postcards and stamps. Again there were interactive exhibits throughout, plus a dressing up area. We also stopped to watch a few films.
