Here’s How Various News Outlets Will Cover Pope Francis’ Funeral


Pope Francis’ funeral is set to take place on Saturday in Vatican City. The farewell ceremony for the first Latin American pontiff and the 266th head of the Catholic Church will occur during the early morning hours for U.S. viewers. The various news networks have already deployed significant staff to the region and will present live coverage of the entire funeral program.

Here is how the various outlets plan to cover Francis’ funeral (all times Eastern):

ABC News
Beginning at 3:30 a.m., David Muir will lead coverage from the Vatican, joined by Deborah Roberts; chief international correspondent James Longman; senior national correspondent Terry Moran; foreign correspondent Maggie Rulli; reporters Ines de La Cuetara, Mike Marza, and David Ono; and contributors Father Jim Martin, Father John Wauck, and Helen Alvaré.

BBC News
Starting at 1 a.m., Maryam Moshiri will present live and continuous coverage from Rome of the build-up to the funeral of Pope Francis. Live coverage of the funeral will be presented by Reeta Chakrabarti beginning at 4:30 a.m.

CBS News
Norah O’Donnell and John Dickerson will anchor funeral coverage starting at 4 a.m. on CBS and CBS News 24/7. Chris Livesay and Seth Doane will join them. Plus, there will be insights from experts, including Vatican analyst Delia Gallagher, Father Anthony Figueiredo, and Crux editor John Allen.

CNN
Anderson Cooper anchors funeral coverage starting at 3 a.m. CNN Vatican correspondent Christopher Lamb and chief international correspondent Clarissa Ward will provide additional reporting and analysis, alongside senior international correspondent Ben Wedeman and journalist Barbie Nadeau. Over on CNN International, coverage will start at midnight anchored Erica Hill and also feature Lamb, Ward, and Wedeman.

Fox News
Martha MacCallum
will anchor the network’s coverage live from Rome beginning at  3 a.m. The special will also feature contributions from chief religion correspondent Lauren Green, contributor Jonathan Morris, and correspondents Alex Hogan and Connor Hansen. Special live coverage will be presented across Fox News Channel (FNC), Fox News Audio, Fox News Digital, and Fox Nation. 

MSNBC
Beginning at 3:45 a.m., Chris Jansing, who will be in the Vatican, will be joined by Christina Ruffini from Washington, D.C., who will provide in-depth analysis. The Weekend will pick up coverage from 7 to 10 a.m.

NBC News

Craig Melvin will lead NBC News and NBC News Now’s coverage at 3:55 a.m. He will be joined by NBC News correspondents stationed in the Vatican City, including anchors Tom Llamas, Anne Thomas, and Deborah Castellano Lubov. Meanwhile, Fr. John Bartunek and Dr. Kathleen Sprows Cummings will join Melvin in New York.
