KOIN anchor Jeff Gianola is leaving television news after 43 years.
“This was my decision. The staff and management at KOIN have always told me I had a job for life. But life is short and it’s time for the next chapter,” he said. “I love what I do. Quite frankly, I often say I was born to do this job. But there are seasons in life, and my long, beautiful summer is about to transition into my next season.”
Gianola got a cochlear implant in February 2025. He shared recently that he was diagnosed with Meniere’s disease several years ago and began to go deaf.
He’ll anchor his last newscast at KOIN sometime in late November 2025.
“Jeff is an Oregon institution who has earned the respect of Oregonians for his insightful story telling that’s made a real impact on the lives of our residents for over 40 years. He broadcast the local news with the same talent and skills as a major network news anchor and viewers in the Portland-Vancouver-Salem DMA all benefitted from the trust Jeff was able to establish with the entire community,” said Tom Keeler, KOIN vp and general manager of KOIN. “Jeff is an irreplaceable fixture in the region and will be greatly missed. Knowing Jeff, however, he will continue to serve our community in other ways for years to come.”
Gianola moved to Portland in 1983 to work at KATU as a morning news anchor and doing weather reports. He was named evening news anchor in 1985, before joining KOIN in 1998.
