Exploring the skies and beyond: My experience as a GREAT Scholar at Cranfield University

A place where innovation meets practice

Cranfield University is renowned for its world-class facilities and resources. What stands out most to me though, is its unique connection to the aerospace industry. The university has its very own airport, a feature that sets it apart from most other academic institutions. This has been particularly meaningful to me, as I’ve always been fascinated by aircrafts. Seeing planes take off and land every day feels like being home and it fuels my passion for the field.

I thrive in an environment that encourages innovation and hands-on learning and Cranfield has provided just that. With its emphasis on practical experience, I’ve been able to dive deep into the field and gain invaluable knowledge.

Why I chose Cranfield University and how it’s shaped my journey

As I reflect on my time at Cranfield University, I can’t help but feel grateful for the experiences and opportunities that have shaped both my academic and personal growth. My decision to study here was driven by a simple yet powerful factor—the university’s reputation as the best institution in the UK for aerospace studies. This made choosing Cranfield an easy and clear decision for me.

Why I chose the MSc in Autonomous Vehicle Dynamics and Control

Having already been a professional in my field, I wanted to build on my expertise and take it to the next level. That’s when I decided to pursue an MSc in Autonomous Vehicle Dynamics and Control. This course aligns perfectly with my passion for unmanned systems and it has been an exciting journey so far. Aerospace is an ever-evolving field with new advancements and challenges cropping up every day and being part of such a dynamic environment has kept me on my toes and excited to learn more.

Building connections and experiences outside of the classroom

One of the most rewarding parts of my time at Cranfield has been the extracurricular opportunities. I had the honour of serving as the President of the Unmanned and Intelligent Aerial Systems (UIAS) Society. This role allowed me to take part in several projects related to unmanned systems, an area I’m deeply passionate about. The experience gave me invaluable insights and allowed me to work closely with like-minded individuals. The support and guidance from both my peers and faculty have been crucial in shaping my future and I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned along the way.

The moments that have shaped me

Some of my most memorable experiences at Cranfield have come from those late-night study sessions, where the pressure was high and the deadlines seemed impossible. Collaborating with my peers on challenging projects helped me build resilience and reinforced the importance of determination. Those moments have not only shaped my academic journey but also helped me realise that the only thing standing between me and success is my mindset.

Embracing life in the UK

Living in the UK has been a unique and enriching experience. The country’s changing seasons, rich history and stunning landscapes have provided countless opportunities to explore. Whether it’s visiting vibrant cities or hiking through scenic countryside, I’ve loved every opportunity to relax and recharge.

One of my long-time dreams was to pursue astronomy as a hobby and I’ve been able to do just that. Stargazing under the clear UK skies has added a beautiful and calming dimension to my life, helping me maintain a sense of balance during a busy academic schedule.

The impact of being a GREAT Scholar

Being a GREAT Scholar has been a transformative experience for me. The scholarship has not only provided financial support but also connected me to a broader network of scholars and alumni. It has opened doors to opportunities I might not have had otherwise, and I am proud to be part of this vibrant community.

The financial support has made a huge difference. Without the burden of financial stress, I’ve been able to focus on my studies and even indulge in some personal hobbies, like flying model aircraft and drones. This has kept me engaged with the technical side of my field and provided a healthy outlet for relaxation.

A networking event to remember

The networking event in Birmingham was a standout moment during my time as a GREAT Scholar. Meeting other scholars and alumni, hearing their stories, and learning from their experiences was incredibly inspiring. It was a humbling experience that reinforced the sense of community that comes with being a GREAT Scholar. One of the talks was so emotional that it moved me to tears—an unforgettable moment that reminded me of the shared journey we are all on.

Advice for future GREAT Scholars

To anyone considering applying for the GREAT Scholarship, I would say: put your heart, mind, and soul into everything you do. When the going gets tough, push a little further—sometimes success is just around the corner. Take full advantage of the opportunities and connections available to you. The journey won’t always be easy, but it will definitely be worth it!

Looking ahead: what’s next for me?

As I continue my studies at Cranfield, I’m now pursuing a PhD in Aerospace. The recognition and opportunities that came with being a GREAT Scholar have played a significant role in helping me get to this point, and I’m excited about what the future holds. After completing my studies, I hope to apply my skills in the aerospace industry, contributing to advancements in the field.

But my goals don’t stop there. I want to create opportunities for others, especially talented individuals from my home country, Pakistan, who lack financial resources but have immense potential. My ultimate aim is to help others realise their true capabilities and give back in meaningful ways.

Being a GREAT Scholar has been a life-changing experience, and it has shaped the direction of my academic and personal journey in ways I never expected. It’s not just about the financial support—it’s about being part of a community that empowers you to dream bigger and achieve more.
