Historic WWII aircraft crash-lands in Kent ahead of VE Day

A historic Supermarine Spitfire from World War II made an emergency landing in a field near Kent, United Kingdom, after losing power.

This incident occurred just ahead of the 80th anniversary celebrations of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), which marks the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, 1945. Although VE Day falls on May 8, this year the UK is observing the occasion on May 5 as part of the bank holiday weekend.

The aircraft involved, a Supermarine Spitfire registered as G-BMSB, crashed near Lower Wall Road in West Hythe on May 3, 2025, at 19:23 local time due to engine failure, as reported by the Aviation Safety Network.
