There are more warnings of storms and tornadoes after parts of the United States were struck by severe weather that killed at least 28 people and devastated London-Corbin Airport (LOZ) in Kentucky.
Currently the National Weather Service says that the Mid-South, Tennessee Valley, and lower Ohio River Valley are most at risk of chaotic thunderstorms, including damaging winds and tornadoes.
A series of tornadoes and catastrophic weather have hit the US in recent days with Kentucky and Missouri particularly suffering badly from deadly storms.
The Associated Press reported that 28 people were killed with 19 dead in Kentucky, seven in Missouri and two in Virginia.
According to reports, more than 20 million Americans are currently living in areas where weather warnings of severe storms or tornadoes are in place.
Communities in London, Kentucky, are reeling from the devastation caused after tornadoes swept through their neighborhoods on May 16, 2025.
At London-Corbin Airport, hangars and aircraft were destroyed leaving the 72-year-old aviation hub unrecognizable.
On May 20, 2025, the Kentucky Department of Aviation said: “After sustaining significant damage from the recent tornado at London-Corbin Airport, the Lake Cumberland Regional Airport is now accepting donations to aid in recovery and rebuilding efforts. Every contribution helps restore a vital part of our aviation community.”
Mayor Randall Weddle has been helping lead the response in the city and confirmed on May 17, 2025, the Air Evac Life Team lost its hangar and emergency helicopter in the storms.
Following the tornadoes on May 16, 2025, London-Corbin Airport, wrote: “So much has changed in the last 24 hours, and we pray for our community, those who have endured tragedy, the first responders who have worked all night, and those coming to aid us as the sun rises.”
Among the aircraft destroyed were a group of Beechcraft T-34 Mentors that are believed to have belonged to the Lima Lima Flight Team.
It is understood that 10 T-34s were based at the airport at the time of the storm, but it is unclear how many were damaged with a number of aircraft pictured being safely stored away.
London Aviation, which has a base at the airport, said that none of its hangars or aircraft were harmed in the tornado.
“Many of our friends were sadly impacted. But we do know that hangars can be rebuilt. Possessions and aircraft can be replaced. However, the loss of homes, livelihoods, and life is devastating,” the company wrote on social media.
An emergency response center has been set up at London-Corbin Airport to help those affected by the tornadoes. The airport is currently without power, and its phones and internet are down.
Kentucky Emergency Management has warned that weather on May 20, 2025, could be severe and target many of the same areas that deadly winds struck in the preceding days.
