Pro Tip: Visit in the high-water season (Feb–May) to witness the falls at full force, or during the dry season (Sept–Nov) for better visibility and adventure activities like swimming in the Devil’s Pool on the Zambian side.
Zambezi River Sunset Cruise
That evening, we booked a Zambezi River Cruise through Shearwater Adventures, enjoying cocktails and canapés while spotting hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird life. The sunset over the Zambezi is nothing short of magical—an absolute must-do for couples and nature lovers.
Wildlife Encounters: Elephant Back Safari & Conservation
Day two took us to the Wild Horizons Elephant Sanctuary and Orphanage, where we enjoyed an early morning elephant-back safari through the bush. We were greeted by passionate guides, warm bonfires, and a rustic bush breakfast featuring vetkoek and tin-cup coffee. These encounters support conservation efforts and offer a deeper understanding of African wildlife.
We even heard the deep moan of a lion nearby—proof that this is real Africa, not just a tourist park.
Authentic African Culture: The Boma Dinner & Drum Show
That night, we dined at The Boma – Dinner & Drum Show, a lively open-air restaurant offering traditional Zimbabwean cuisine, interactive drumming, dancing, and cultural performances. Brave diners can try Mopani worms—a local delicacy!
Exploring Beyond the Falls: The Big Tree & Bush Walks
Our third day began with a bush walk to the legendary Big Tree, a massive Baobab tree believed to be over a thousand years old. A helpful local policeman offered to escort us through the rural village paths, making it an unforgettable and authentic encounter.
The Flight of Angels: Helicopter Tour Over Victoria Falls
No visit to Victoria Falls is complete without experiencing the “Flight of Angels”—a scenic helicopter tour over the falls. This thrilling ride offers a bird’s-eye view of the entire gorge, river, and surrounding national parks. It was my first helicopter ride, and the panoramic views were unforgettable.
Colonial Elegance: High Tea at the Victoria Falls Hotel
To unwind after our aerial adventure, we visited the Victoria Falls Hotel for traditional afternoon tea. With its Edwardian architecture, manicured lawns, and views of the falls, this historic hotel oozes old-world charm and elegance. Although we passed on dinner, the tea service was a delight.
Wildlife Sightings and Farewell
Even our departure was eventful, with a surprise baboon sighting en route to the airport. As we bid farewell to Victoria Falls, we left with unforgettable memories of adventure, wildlife, and family bonding in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
