Here’s our selection of the best love songs out today – Texx and the City

To celebrate this auspicious day of luuurve, we’ve put together a selection of tracks released today that will get you into the spirit of romance.

Phil Higgins | “Yours Truly, Julie”

Taken from her upcoming EP Blue + Green, this is a deeply personal and reflective offering from the young singer-songwriter, blending indie-pop with a richly nostalgic depth.

“It’s for the dreamers who aren’t willing to settle,” says Phil Higgins. “Those who chase what they feel is calling to them. Sometimes you have to let people go so they can become who they need to be.”

CHXRL | “I Won’t Let You Take Me Down”

An honest and vulnerable song about CHXRL‘s self-professed mommy issues, “I Won’t Let You Take Me Down” is a tender ballad made for anyone who’s doing some much needed introspection today. With visceral production and a beautifully heartfelt chorus, this one will get you in your feels, and maybe that’s a good thing.

Ben Rodrigues | “Red”

With a searing, alt-pop ballad, Ben Rodrigues returns with a surprisingly grungy new offering. Taken from his EP of the same name, “Red” is seriously sexy, driven by a dirty bass line that never lets up.

Droomsindroom | “Soen”

This brother duo taking the Afrikaans pop scene by storm have released a feel-good ode to the little moments that make life meaningful, captured through the lens of unconditional love. Droomsindroom state their devotion, plain and clear, with words like “Can I kiss you as if the world was ending?” Need we say anything more?

Faker Streets | “Find You”

Drawing inspiration directly from the opening scene of Drive (if you haven’t seen it, a group of robbers make a quick but cool getaway, ushered in to the steady Daft Punk patter of Kavinsky’s “Nightcall”) Faker Streets craft a soundscape that’s atmospheric and immersive, with just the right amount of edge. Lyrically, it’s all about building up an image of the perfect partner in your mind, and desperately searching for them. It’s touching and it’s playful, and that’s why we love it.

Aunty Helynn | “Heart”

Aunty Helynn, the alter-ego of Douglas Vrey, offers a song for the singletons, and it’s fierce. Produced by Jacques Du Plessis of High Seas Studios, “Heart” is a pop-rock ballad layered with driving drum beats and cosmic synths, inspired by the likes of ABBA, Florence & The Machine, Coldplay and Chappell Roan. Armed with sharp wit and a wicked sense of humour, “Heart” is a call to love yourself before you love others, and how fitting for a day like today.

To further commemorate this day of Saint Valentine, we’ve put together a playlist of some of our favourite love songs, local and international, old and new.
