Revenge Is Sweet Album Review – The Hip Hop African

  1. Song: What’s The West that could happen?

The song starts with vibrant drumbeats and leads into a calm beat where Jay starts talking about his early life and his inspiration growing up as a teen with his dreams and aspirations. Fast forward, he goes into talking about how he had to escape his hometown due to crews he can’t hang with anymore and living conditions while there. Meanwhile, he talks about how he made it out of those conditions and started from scratch making a living for himself, whether it was working, or trying to promote his skill and music. In overall, I feel that this song was a good start to the album as it took a dive into his early life situations and set the tone for the album.

This song gave off a faster pace to it where Jody began his verses by referring to his family members such as his mom and kids and making it known that he became successful in life for those family members. He goes on to talk a little about the luxury lifestyle he has access to today, including mentioning a Mercedes Benz. Also, he talks about the dedication he had to pursue to get to this point and uses that as a motivation factor for continuing the song.

This song really reverts back to the slower pace and conveys the overall message of loot love, which is loving money. He raps about all the situations that had to do with getting money whether it was a current situation or situations he was involved in back at home. For example, he mentioned people getting recruited to shoot someone for a price. Lastly, he ends off talking about forgetting his enemies and going towards goals.

This song starts off with a jazzy beat, then leads into Jay talking about how the world has become cold to him, this was honestly a really repetitive song to me in terms of conveying a message but what I took from it is that the world is cold and people he used to surround himself with are no longer with him because he had to duck off to complete his goal and succeed.

When the song starts, the beat kind of reminded me of a Drake type beat. What I feel like Jay Jody is trying to do in this song is give others a mental message and some sort of wake-up call. He does this by beginning and saying, “For all my people in the back.” As this continued, he started rapping about how they should know they are a superstar and be reminded of who they are. He then goes bar for bar rapping about certain egos and attitudes. Meanwhile, I feel the message he’s trying to give off about attitudes is the fact that we should not let other opinions reflect on who we are.

This song starts with him repeatedly saying Free Me, Free Me. The concept behind him saying free me is because he wants to be freed from all the difficult situations in his life such as the pain his mother went through, and from some situations his father never learned from, which eventually affected Jody. Overall, he wants to be freed from situations he feels like he probably couldn’t avoid and still deals with mental trauma till this day from these situations.

Overall, I feel that this was a nice album. It’s always a stretch for me to go out of my comfort zone and listen to out-of-country rappers but it’s a great perspective change I would say. He gave a perspective on his early life situations back in his country and messaged a brighter insight into how these experiences and traumas reflect the success he is having today.
