Simi Shares Honest Feelings About Fans Nicknaming Her Daughter ‘Duduke’

Nigerian singer and songwriter Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, is setting the record straight about a nickname fans have lovingly attached to her daughter, Deja.

In a recent interview, the award-winning artist opened up about her discomfort with fans calling her daughter “Duduke” a reference to her 2020 hit single released during her pregnancy.

While Simi acknowledged that the nickname stems from a place of love and admiration, she admitted it doesn’t sit well with her. “People call her ‘Duduke’ because of the song, and I know it comes from a good place, so I don’t overreact,” she shared. “But personally, I don’t like it because my daughter has a name.”

Simi emphasized the importance of honoring Deja’s identity, explaining that while Duduke holds emotional value as a song, it was never meant to become a personal label for her child.

She also clarified that “Duduke” simply refers to the gentle rhythm of a heartbeat or drumbeat — a symbolic sound used in the song to express the joy of motherhood, not a nickname.

Released at the height of her pregnancy, Duduke quickly became a beloved anthem for expectant mothers and fans alike. But for Simi, Deja deserves to grow into her own name — not one borrowed from a melody.
