Worms make an impressive debut with Legless and Grubby – Texx and the City

The emergence of a new band on the scene is always exciting. And when that band brings something fresh and fun to the mix – it’s even better. That’s what Jozi punk rock outfit Worms have managed to do with their debut EP. Legless and Grubby is a project that epitomises modern punk: cheeky, sharp, and memorable.

Clocking in at just under six minutes, the EP is brief, but Worms’ witty lyricism and gritty delivery leave you both satisfied and hungry for more. The most striking part of the project is how Worms have managed to happen upon what  I’ll call the “Outkast effect”. Much like the rap duo’s iconic 2000s single “Hey Ya,” Legless and Grubby plays the fine line between joy and destruction. The music is upbeat and euphoric, but the lyrics contradict that vibe entirely. The band explains: “Happy riffs with negative lyrics seemed to flow naturally.”

Highlights include “Bother You,” a track that  features John Wayne Gacy quotes turned into something oddly liberating, and “Wormthem (worm anthem),” a nice nod to Oi! punk. It’s basically our inevitable demise set to an infectious riff, reminding us that in the end, it all goes to the  worms. Legless and Grubby is a solid debut that’s punchy and to the point.

This punk project is for anyone who’s had to pick themselves up after life got tough. The blend of macabre and silly results in an impactful and sophisticated project. Worms have our attention and we can’t wait to see what else they have in store.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
