What’s the Difference Between Piston Compressors & Reciprocating Compressors?

When looking for a new air compressor for your operation, it can be difficult to differentiate between the many different types of systems. Luckily, Air Power East are here to help! During your search, you may have come across the terms “piston” and “reciprocating” compressors, but what’s the difference? Here’s everything you need to know.

Piston Compressors vs Reciprocating Compressors

“Piston” and “reciprocating” are terms used interchangeably and refer to the same type of air compressor. This is because this type of compressor uses pistons and a reciprocating motion to compress air. Find out more below.

What is a Piston Compressor & How Does it Work?

Simply put, a piston air compressor is comprised of pistons, crankshaft and cylinders. The pistons are driven by a crankshaft in a reciprocating motion (back and forth in the cylinder) to allow air through the inlet valve, into the cylinder, then compress it. To increase the pressure of the air, it will reduce its volume. This cycle is then repeated to produce a constant compressed air supply.

This technology is known as the principle of positive displacement and has been used since the 17th century, therefore this type of compressor is one of the oldest and most common compressors you will find.

What Are the Different Types of Piston Compressor?

There is not just one type of piston compressor, there are many different variations that have evolved over the years to suit different applications, but they all follow the same operating principle.

  • Single-stage: Compress air in one stroke (up or down) within the cylinder
  • Double-stage: Compress air in two strokes (up and down) within the cylinder
  • Multi-stage: Compress air in multiple cylinders which vary in size
  • Oil-injected: Circulate oil throughout the machine to lubricate moving parts
  • Oil-free: Contain fewer moving parts, so less lubrication is required

The main difference between the types of piston compressors is how many steps are involved and the cylinder configuration which ultimately affects how many moving parts are required.

Benefits of Piston & Reciprocating Compressors

So, why are piston compressors the most common air compressor around? Here are some benefits of using this compressed air system.

Easy to Maintain

As mentioned above, the way they work is extremely simple which means they are incredibly easy to maintain. Maintenance is fairly straightforward, so as long as you keep up with regular servicing, your system will last which reduces downtime and costs associated with repair and replacement.

High-Pressure Capability

They are suited to heavy duty environments and are able to meet high-pressure sir demands due to the fact that they do not require a large volume of air or power to meet requirements.

Cost-Efficient

As they are easy to maintain and can effectively meet a wide range of demands, they are very energy-efficient which is reflected in their ongoing costs too. They can take care of  both light and heavy-duty tasks and they are an affordable option with lower investment costs.

What Are Piston Compressors Used For?

Piston compressors are extremely versatile, so they are suitable for a number of applications. The industries they are typically used within are:

  • Construction: jackhammers, nail guns, grinders
  • Manufacturing: powering conveyor belts, pneumatic tools, operating machinery
  • Automotive: spray painting, tyre inflation, pneumatic tools
  • HVAC: pressurising and circulating refrigerants
  • Healthcare: respirators and ventilators, climate control, dental equipment
