Delhi Airport gains a place in top 10 airports in the world – NetworkThoughts

Delhi Airport, India’s largest airport, has gained one spot in the Top 10 airports in the world. It closed 2024 at the ninth position handling 7,78,20,834 passengers as per data released by ACI (Airport Council International) World. This is a gain of one position over 2023 and a quantum leap over 2019 (pre-pandemic) when the airport was at 17th position.

The improvement in position bodes well for the airport to attract more carriers and expand its hub status with additional flights from Air India and IndiGo, especially on the international side and being a transfer hub for International to International connections.

The top three have maintained their position with Atlanta continuing its top position, which it held even pre-pandemic. Dubai comes in next followed by Dallas. Atlanta is the hub for Delta Air Lines, Dubai for Emirates and Dallas for American Airlines. Tokyo Haneda has gained one position, pushing London Heathrow to fifth position.

Denver and Istanbul have maintained their sixth and seventh positions respectively, while Chicago jumped from Ninth to Eighth and Delhi from Tenth to Ninth. Shanghai made an entry into the top 10, largely due to the opening up of the Chinese market which remained closed for an extended period. It was at eighth position pre-pandemic. Los Angeles, which was eighth in 2023, is now out of the list of top 10 airports by passengers.

What from here on?

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is undergoing significant transformations to establish itself as a premier global aviation hub. These developments aim to enhance capacity, streamline connectivity, and improve passenger experience. Terminal 1 is set to become fully operational from April 15, 2025. All flights currently operating from Terminal 2 will shift to the revamped T1, which now features state-of-the-art technologies and expanded facilities to handle increased passenger traffic.

When all four runways are fully operational post current work, Delhi can expect to handle more movements and thus more passengers. The airport can very well reach seventh position in 2025.
