New / Expanded Airports

Having recently returned from South Africa, I saw reports of new developments there and then, as the system works that way, reports from elsewhere. So I thought I’d put them in here and other global contributions welcome. I doubt that any will need their own thread but it shows some of the expansion of countries wanting to boost airline traffic.

South Africa
CPT is now highly limited for expansion. Like many place they have been built up around. They could fit a small second runway for short haul and free up the main but nothing announced – as far as I know. Which is where the Cape Winelands Airport comes in. Currently a private GA some 27Km / 16.5m to the North, North East of CPT. They want to expand to collect s/h at a lower price. As they are near the N1 road and, as the name says, the winelands. They could well become the second airport in the area. Which would save CPT having to build anything more.

The govt announced plans to build multi-billion infrastructure for a new city based around Lanseria, Gauteng. HLA is a second airport for JNB set to the north west of the city. Used by LCCs and cargo.

Barbuda
Tiny Barbuda, which was left decimated by Hurricane Irma in 2017, had just two weeks earlier opened its brand new airport. It is now – depending on who you ask – reopening for business or on a fast track to becoming an exclusive billionaires’ enclave. The new airport, which has been designed to accommodate multiple private jets, was described at its ribbon-cutting ceremony by Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority chief executive Colin C James as a “game changer for Barbuda, as we look to attracting the luxury traveller and private jet owners from around the world to Barbuda”.

Nigeria
Lekki International Airport is a proposed airport in Lekki, Nigeria, designed for a capacity of 5 million passengers annually.

Burkina Faso
Thomas Sankara International Airport Ouagadougou is now boxed in by city expansion so they plan: Ouagadougou-Donsin Airport.

China announces $4billion project to build world’s largest artifical island for 80m pax. Dalian Jinzhouwan International Airort due 2035

Portugal
Lisbon Luís de Camões Airport is to be built [2034], alleviating congestion at Humberto Delgado

Saudia Arabia
King Khalid Airport, Riyadh. Has just completed the first phase of expanding terminal 1. Increasing annual pax capacity from 3m to 5m.
