
Not that long ago, Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in the country also had the maximum operational airports under its belt. However, things moved rapidly in the last few months for two states. flybig started operations to various points in Uttar Pradesh like Chitrakoot, Shravasti, Aligarh and Azamgarh from Lucknow, the state capital. Lucknow is currently undergoing runway repairs and is closed for most of the day time. The smaller airports are without navigation aids needed for night landing and thus cannot sustain operations in the limited operating window of Lucknow airport. The Lucknow airport is currently undergoing runway works and the airport is closed from 1100 hours to 1700 hours daily, which will continue till July 15, 2025. While the runway recarpeting work started at Lucknow, the western state of Maharashtra added more operational airports. This includes Amravati, which will also host the Flight Training Academy of Air India and flights to Solapur resumed today as Fly91, the Goa based airline connected Mopa, Goa with Solapur.
Uttar Pradesh which had 13 operational airports has come down to nine, while Maharashtra now has 13 operational airports. This includes Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Nashik, Shirdi, Kolhapur, Nanded, Jalgaon, Gondia, Amravati, Sindhudurg and now Solapur.
How are the other states doing?
Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh are at nine airports each, while Gujarat comes in next with eight operational airports. Madhya Pradesh has seven operational airports while Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have six operational airports each.
Network Thoughts
In most states, there are airports which have either been operationalised under RCS-UDAN and not seeing flight services or there remain airports which have had flight services in the past but remain unutilised right now.
There remains scope to resume services to Kushinagar (Uttar Pradesh), Latur (Maharashtra), Vellore (Tamil Nadu) and many such across the country.
