As you have surely heard, Alabama’s basketball coach Nate Oats became a high school math teacher after earning a bachelor’s degree in math education. Through the years, he combined his love for hoops and numbers to develop a system for evaluating players’ value to the team beyond points scored, rebounds, assists, etc. He calls his system “Blue Collar Points” that emphasizes hustle plays and a hard-working mentality. A “Hard Hat” is awarded to the player with the most blue collar points earned through plays like deflections, steals, blocks, and floor dives.
Nine different players won at least one hard hat this season, led by Mo Dioubate with seven.
